Rees was responsible for Shell’s global legal function, heading a division of approximately 1,000 staff and helped to expand the company’s panel of favoured law firms to over 150 in a range of jurisdictions.

He says: “I am very excited to be returning to the practice of international arbitration and Thirty Nine Essex Street is the perfect set to be joining. With its international focus and wide variety of specialisations it provides the ideal platform for me both to represent parties in disputes and to sit as an arbitrator.”

Prior to joining Royal Dutch Shell, Rees was a partner in the litigation department of Debevoise & Plimpton and before that spent 27 years at Norton Rose where he was partner and head of global dispute resolution.

During his time in private practice he gained a wealth of experience in complex international disputes for a variety of industries including the financial, insurance, construction and energy sectors. He also represented government departments, inter-governmental agencies in many multi-million dollar disputes.

Thirty-Nine Essex Street’s joint head of chambers, Stephen Tromans QC, says the chambers is “very much looking forward” to seeing Rees’ practice flourish with them. “We are delighted that Peter’s background, both within the energy industry and in private practice, will bring a great deal of experience in this area of work, which we see as of major importance.”

Rees has previously featured in Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration, Who’s Who Legal: Commercial Litigation and Who’s Who Legal: Construction.
