Total fuels its legal department with general counsel hire
Oilfield services specialist Maarten Scholten has been announced as the new senior vice president and general counsel of leading oil company Total. He will take up the position on 1 January 2014 at the company’s Paris headquarters.
The Dutch national has over 30 years experience in the energy field beginning his career at Loeff & van der Ploeg before moving to Schlumberger, where he spent 20 years in roles including director of legal services, head of finance, president of Schlumberger Oilfield Services for Europe, Africa and the CIS and director of mergers and acquisitions. Following his departure in 2006 he founded the oil field development company Delta Hydrocarbons and was co-executive director until 2009. Scholten currently sits on the board of directors at BW Offshore and is also chairman of the supervisory board of biotech investment company LSP Advisory.
Total is one of the largest publically traded oil and gas companies in the world with operations in over 130 countries and sales revenue of over €200 billion in 2012.
