Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 - Oil & Gas

As previous chapters have mentioned, Singapore is an important regional hub in many fields. The situation is no different in the oil and gas sector – several of the eight lawyers we identify here are active in nearby countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,Thailand, and Vietnam. Our research also indicates that the large international players dominate the market, with practitioners from UK, US and Australian firms all appearing in this chapter.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 - Patents

In this chapter we highlight 13 leading practitioners in Singapore from 10 firms. Singapore has a thriving intellectual property market: 9,164 patent applications were filed there in 2006, according to figures published by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). A number of the individuals selected for this chapter also feature in the trademarks chapter.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 – Project Finance

Seventeen professionals at 12 firms make up our project finance chapter. These practitioners have an established track record representing sponsors and lenders in project financing and refinancing deals. With significant government funding aimed at economic development and a free-enterprise economy there is no shortage of project finance work in Singapore. A number of practitioners listed below also appear in the oil and gas chapter, highlighting the importance of this industry in the regional market.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 – Real Estate

Singapore is witnessing huge developments in its commercial and residential real estate sectors, with a massive influx of foreign investment. Four of the largest acquisitions in Asia were carried out in Singapore and the level of activity shows no signs of slowing.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 – Regulatory Communications

The research for this chapter has identified 11 individuals, all of whom are recommended for their expertise in the representation of telecoms clients before communications ministries and government regulators. Our research has targeted private practice lawyers with an expertise in offering advice to corporates on questions of licensing, interconnection, tariffs and other general aspects of compliance with the regulatory regime. Given the close relationship between the regulation of communications and competition law, two of practitioners on the following pages appear in both chapters.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 - Shipping & Maritime

Singapore is the busiest port in the world in terms of shipping tonnage, receiving an average of 140,000 vessel calls per year. In 2004, total vessel arrivals for the year, again in terms of tonnage, reached 1.04 billion gross tons, and it is also a world leader for container trans-shipment according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. As such, it is unsurprising that Singapore is a major centre for shipping law expertise, and our research picks out 23 individuals from 15 firms who lead in the finance, contentious and non-contentious sides of shipping law.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 - Trademarks

As companies continue to expand in Asia, their trademarks need new levels of protection. With the legal system becoming ever more sophisticated, protection of trademarks and trademark litigation must meet high standards in a market where the intellectual property laws can be unfamiliar to foreign companies and counterfeiting poses a particular danger.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: Singapore 2007 - Banking

Singaporean companies remain extremely vigorous investors and the city state’s banking sector is party to some of Asia’s biggest transactions. Singapore’s high level of political stability and economic development mean that its law firms often act as a bridge between East and West, working as a hub for wider Asian business interests, hence the strong presence of joint-venture law firms in the area.
