The 14 individuals from 10 firms featured in this chapter generally fall into two camps: those who deal with fund formation and transactions on behalf of private equity and venture capital; and those whose practices focus primarily on the formation and servicing of another popular form of investment, hedge funds.

Our research into the energy industry in California has identified 19 lawyers from 13 firms with an established record advising major, independent and state energy companies and utilities.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: California 2007 – Competition

The research for this chapter has unearthed great competition expertise within California. In total we identify 28 individuals from 19 firms who earned the highest of praise from both clients and peers. San Francisco houses the Federal Trade Commission’s western field office and the city is home to over half the nominees. We have also uncovered leading lights in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley, all of whom contribute to a burgeoning practice in the state.

California’s economy is one of the largest in the world, let alone the United States, and as a result high levels of corporate activity and transactional work pass through and derive from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley, and other places in the state. As such, there are particularly high levels of transactional legal expertise in the local commercial firms, and the research has identified 28 practitioners from 15 leading practices who stand out.

Most Highly Regarded Firms: California 2007 - Aviation

Our research has uncovered 19 individuals from 16 firms who are recognised by clients and peers as pre-eminent for their aviation work. These lawyers represent a range of clients including airlines, insurers, engine and component manufacturers, and airports. However, practices differ greatly from individual to individual and firm to firm. A number of the most highly regarded practitioners focus on the commercial side of the industry, offering advice on areas such as aircraft purchase, sale, leasing and financing, alliances and joint ventures, as well as airline start-ups. Others specialise in contentious liability matters, such as those arising from major disasters.
