Germany: Competition Economists 2019

This chapter identifies the leading 22 competition economists in the German market. They have been selected for their outstanding work in a range of antitrust matters including M&A transactions, vertical restraint cases and regulatory compliance.

International economic consultancy firm E.CA Economics achieves highly this year, with two of its practitioners prominently listed.
Rainer Nitsche is ranked among the very elite of competition economists in the German market. He is a favourite among clients, with one noting that “his forensic experience and state-of-the-art knowledge are breath-taking”.
Hans Friederiszick is lauded by peers as “one of the best names” in the competition space. He has considerable expertise in leading teams in international antitrust investigations.

Goethe University Frankfurt sees two standout economists listed this year.
Roman Inderst is praised as “an outstanding practitioner” and “one of the top theoretical economists in Germany”. He is particularly knowledgeable regarding competition regulation for which he is frequently retained as an adviser.
Christine Zulehner is a top name in Germany, who peers rate highly and consider “an excellent and very well-respected economist”.

Lademann & Associates is a prominent German consultancy firm that specialises in antitrust matters. It sees two of its specialists listed this year.  
Peers across Europe identify Rainer Lademann as a standout name in the German market. He commands over 30 years of experience as a competition economist, and his practice covers the full range of antitrust law.
Niels Frank is singled out as a prominent figure in the field by peers this year. He has over a decade of experience in competition-related matters across a wide range of industries, including consumer goods, advertising and business insurance.

At the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods, Martin Hellwig is praised by market commentators across Europe as a superb name in the competition space, and comes highly recommended for his strong economic acumen.
Christian von Weizsäcker is a well-regarded economist among market players who commands over 50 years of experience as an economic expert.

The University of Mannheim sees two of its members nominated here.
Volker Nocke is held in high esteem by peers in the domestic market for his work on horizontal and vertical mergers in the competition space.
Martin Peitz also gains recognition this year as a highly skilled expert in competition economics.
