The “legendary” Andreas Rodin is an internationally recognised authority on the tax structuring of funds and is described by peers as “a renowned, highly accomplished legal adviser on all tax and other private equity matters”.
Uwe Bärenz stands out as one of Germany’s elite investment management lawyers. Regarded as “extremely focused and deeply knowledgeable”, he is highlighted for his sophisticated understanding of the tax and regulatory environment for private and alternative investment vehicles.
“Rising star of the industry” Peter Bujotzek is highly recommended by both clients and peers who emphasise his “in-depth understanding of the Horizon 2020 rules combined with his venture capital expertise”. Joachim Kayser is “a well-known name” in the field, providing guidance on both fund-structuring and compliance matters. He is acknowledged by peers as a leading figure in the alternative investment fund space.
Managing partner Achim Pütz wins high praise for his superb practice focusing on what one respondent describes as “the more esoteric private funds work”. His knowledge of alternative investment structures makes him the practitioner of choice for many institutional investors.
Hans Stamm is an esteemed figure in the region, with a thriving practice and over 20 years’ experience. Market sources note his thorough understanding of offshore investment using structured notes and other wrappers.

International firm CLIFFORD CHANCE garners two listings this year, including “key name and expert in the area” Marco Simonis. Respondents regard him as “the main man in Berlin” who “always provides high-quality advice on the technical side”, particularly in relation to cutting-edge fund-linked derivatives.
In Munich, the “very well known” Sonya Pauls is described by sources as “extremely good with structuring large funds”. She is noted for her excellent work providing invaluable guidance throughout a fund’s lifecycle, from new fund formation to restructuring and dispute resolution.

Daniel Voigt at CMS HASCHE SIGLE is acclaimed for his sophisticated knowledge of how Germany’s shifting regulatory framework affects funds, investors and fund-managers. He focuses his world-class practice on alternative investments, including real estate funds.
Tillman Kempf is extremely well regarded in the space, recognised for his comprehensive understanding of the tax compliance matters. He frequently advises financial institutions and asset managers on the whole spectrum of investment vehicles and financial instruments.

HENGELER MUELLER sees two of its leading private funds practitioners nominated.
Thomas Paul enjoys a strong reputation in the market and is regarded as “outstanding on matters relating to open-end funds”. He counsels financial institutions across a range of governance and compliance matters, and provides comprehensive advice on fund administration.
The “excellent” Edgar Wallach wins widespread praise for his fantastic work on the formation, structuring and restructuring of a range of asset-classes, in addition to assisting with foreign financial institutions’ and asset managers’ entry into the German market.

DEBEVOISE & PLIMPTON’s Patricia Volhard tops our research this year, drawing widespread praise from prominent practitioners in the market.
