Canada: Due Diligence Accountants 2017

In this chapter 16 leading practitioners are selected for their track records performing due diligence in advance of large and complex transactions. They stand out for their ability to identify key risks and opportunities and their knowledge of the conditions, warranties and indemnities that ought to be included in an agreement.

DELOITTE boasts the pre-eminent due diligence offering in Canada with six of the top accountants listed this year.
Alexandre Baril has over 20 years’ experience working on mergers and acquisitions, both in Canada and abroad, and is recognised for his particular expertise conducting due diligence on large TMT transactions.
In James Stuart the firm has another highly experienced M&A expert. He is singled out by market sources for his sophisticated knowledge of capital.
Brad Gordica is lauded as a mining expert whose profound sector knowledge make him the go-to adviser for many on the west coast, while managing partner of the firm’s British Columbia advisory group Ivor Luk also comes highly recommended.

PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS follows closely behind, with five nominations in this year’s research, including the extremely well-regarded Miriam Pozza. As the firm’s deals leader in Quebec, she conducts both buy- and sell-side due diligence, providing analysis and advice on firms’ balance sheets, governance procedures and forecasting processes.
Global valuations leader Helen Mallovy Hicks leverages more than 30 years’ experience dealing with a variety of businesses across a range of sectors in order to provide comprehensive valuation reports on parties to a transaction.
British Columbia deals leader Jim McGuigan advises companies on a range of corporate matters, combining expertise in corporate finance and transactional support. He is recommended by market sources for the clarity of his valuation advice in due diligence reviews.

KPMG’s three nominations in this chapter include transaction support guru Ian Wilshaw. Having focused for more than 18 years on due diligence work, he is considered one of the go-to experts by debt providers and private equity houses on the west coast.
The strength of the firm’s British Columbia offering is underscored by the nomination of a second due diligence expert in Simon Chen. He is recognised as an authority in acquisition due diligence whose detailed analysis is of particular value in designing post-deal integration procedures.

François Tellier leads ERNST & YOUNG’s transaction advisory services team in Quebec and is one of two nominations at the firm. He is commended for his forward-thinking approach to due diligence which extends beyond operational and financial analysis to include the strategic elements of a transaction.
