Fasken Martineau DuMoulin leads our research with four practitioners. Edgar Frechette in Vancouver advises some of British Columbia’s most prominent families on wealth management and succession and is described by peers as being among the most prominent players. Howard Carr’s practice specialises in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious estate planning including wills and trusts and cross-border planning. He is regarded as “a longstanding and well-respected figure in private finance”. Elie Roth specialises in tax planning and is described as having “an encyclopaedic knowledge” of the area. His engagements include advising high-net-worth individuals on taxation matters. Rhonda Rudick also has a prominent standing in estate planning and personal tax planning.
Miller Thomson garners two listings in its Toronto office. Martin Rochwerg is one of the leading names in our research with peers recognising his expertise in multi-jurisdictional tax issues, wealth management and owner-manager planning and charitable trusts. The “top-notch” Rachel Blumenfeld specialises in trusts and estates administration and personal tax planning, including not-for-profit law.
Robinson Sheppard Shapiro’s Martin Lord is head of the firm’s tax law services group with a reputation for effectively handling complex tax and succession planning. He is noted for his “meticulous and thorough approach”. Marilyn Piccini Roy is highly recommended for her expertise in managing trusts and estates for Quebec residents with property in the US or Europe.
Paul Gibney at Thorsteinssons “really knows his stuff” when it comes to both domestic and cross-border estate planning and wealth management for high-net-worth individuals. David Thompson focuses on trust and estate management relating to tax issues, and is regarded as “a clever and creative lawyer”.
At Stewart McKelvey, Richard Niedermayer is recommended for his skill in complex international asset administration for estates including multiple trusts across jurisdictions. He is “a sharp and technically excellent lawyer”. Timothy Matthews QC is a specialist in trust and estate litigation, tax and estate planning and probate procedures.

Maureen Berry at Goodmans is a high-ranking individual in our research. She is head of the firm's personal tax and estates advisory group where she focuses on estate planning and taxation issues relating to domestic and international estates. She is described as “an instantly recognisable and respected name”.
