Now in its second year, the insurance and reinsurance expert witnesses included in our listings are a crucial asset to lawyers, providing evidence on insurance coverage and claims, risk transfer, valuations and damages. This year we highlight 28 leading individuals across the US, England and Australia.

Among others, we highlight FTI Consulting, Berkeley Research Group and Navigant as the top consultancy firms in this field.

FTI Consulting leads the way with six inclusions in this year’s edition. In New York, Paul Braithwaite focuses his practice on reinsurance pricing and underwriting and is praised for his “ability to get to the heart of an issue”. He is joined by Richard Hershman, who is commended for his “excellent presentation” and “vast experience”, and Wendy Shapss who is a “true star” and a “first choice” for many. Gregory Thaler in San Francisco is the global leader of the firm’s business insurance claims practice and is a “true asset” to clients. In London, Ian Marshall has “impressive insights” in run-off, insurance technical investigations and complex reinsurance transactions. Jerry McArthur “expertly” leads the insurance practice in London, specialising in insurance operational and service delivery with a particular focus on claims, delegated authorities, outsourcing and run-off management.

Five names from Berkeley Research Group are recognised across four offices in three countries. David Saunders in London has been appointed as expert accountant on over 70 occasions. He has given oral testimony both in the UK courts and to arbitral tribunals in a number of jurisdictions and is a “leading authority” on valuations and damages. Sydney-based Jonathan Humphrey has advised on insurance claims across the construction, energy, TMT, financial services and manufacturing industries and is a “consummate expert”. Robin Cantor in the firm’s Washington DC office specialises in insurance claims analysis and impresses with his “prestigious experience”. The “fantastic” Joseph Anastasi in Emeryville has almost 40 years of analysing financial damages for matters in litigation and forensic accounting, particularly relating to insurance claims. Jeff Mitchell is “terrific” on insurance and reinsurance matters relating to healthcare claims, environmental, asbestos and other toxic tort matters.

England

Romy Comiter from Mazars is a technical insurance professional and consultant with over 25 years of experience and currently heads the firm’s insurance consultancy team. Her “invaluable sector experience” and “technical expertise” are praised by clients. Jeremy Fall from Quest Group has over 20 years’ experience as a claims specialist and is noted for his “detailed responses” and “careful handling”.

USA

Navigant is a top performing firm in the US with four inclusions across three states. Andrea Tecce in Washington DC is head of finance and operations for the global legal technology solutions practice, and impresses clients with her “technical wizardry”. Christopher Makuc specialises in liability estimation and insurance coverage, and offers a “diligent manner” to clients. Patrick McGrath in Chicago boasts a “great reputation” while Hamilton-based Bradley Drew is a “versatile” expert witness.

Gnarus Advisors sees two of its professionals recommended this year, including Stephen Sellick who analyses claims in the context of insurance allocation using his “invaluable sector experience”. Jessica Horewitz is a “brilliant” data analyst, with “vast experience” in managing large volumes of data and conceptualising analyses to best use the data for clients’ needs.

RWH Myers & Company also sees two names featured. William Myers in New York has a “superb reputation” for represented major corporations around the world in the analysis and presentation of complex loss of earnings claims. Sharon Pisko Wolfe from Milford boasts an “enviable list of clients” and always offers “sound and concise testimony”.

Reassess Inc’s Paul Thomson III is a “true leader in the field” in loss portfolio assessment work and is “a firm favourite” with clients. At Arbitration/Mediation Services, Jonathan Rosen is a claims and underwriting expert whose “meticulous” approach to cases makes him “highly sought after” in the market. With over 30 years’ experience, Andrew Maneval of Chesham Consulting has an “astute technical mind” and impresses with his “quick grasp of complex issues”. Joe Loggia at Buxbaum Loggia & Associates offers expert testimony on settlements and is someone clients “return to again and again”. Compass Reinsurance Consulting in New Hampshire is represented by John Chaplin who offers “accessible presentation” of technical issues as well as custom and practice and the broad precepts upon which the reinsurance industry is based. Allan Windt at his own firm is commended for his “unrivalled reputation” and “resolute focus” on insurance claims issues. Charles Mullin is the managing partner of Bates White Economic Consulting and is as a “force to be reckoned with”, according to those he has worked for.
