France: Private Funds 2016

The Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD), which has created a more inclusive and robust regulatory framework for alternative investment funds within the EU, continues to be the key point of discussion with our respondents. The compliance demands the directive has placed on fund managers and legal counsel has been substantial, and this doesn’t look likely to abate as a review and re-write of the AIFMD is already scheduled for 2017. This year we recognise 11 leaders in the field of private funds law.

Gide Loyrette Nouel leads our research with three names recommended from the firm. Nadège Nguyen is considered “an authority in private equity transactions”. Her “distinctive commercial and technical expertise” is lauded by clients who “wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her”. Stéphane Puel is the managing partner of the firm and head of its investment funds team. Clients praise his “willingness to go the extra mile” and his “creative solutions”. Ann Baker focuses her practice on private equity investment fund structuring and formation and is a “valuable asset to her clients”.

Two names from King & Wood Mallesons are also featured. Arnaud David, co-head of the investment funds group in France, works with fund sponsors on the formation and ongoing representation of private investment funds, impressing with his “sterling reputation” and “strategic approach”. Fellow co-head Nathalie Duguay is recommended for her “astute legal mind” and “excellent attention to detail”.

Jones Day is represented by Florence Moulin, who focuses her practice on structuring alternative investment funds with respect to both tax and legal aspects. She is widely considered to be a “leading light” in the market.

Spitz & Poulle’s Jean-Baptiste Poulle is praised for his “international outlook” and his “technical expertise” in relation to the formation of investment funds.
