For the third consecutive year, Loyens & Loeff is recognised as the world’s leading corporate tax firm, with a staggering 27 lawyers from 11 offices worldwide featured in the corresponding chapter – more than any other firm. The Amsterdam office is a hub of talent and fields 10 practitioners to this edition. Marc Klerks is “internationally renowned” for his tax expertise. He advises clients on the tax aspects of structured finance, private and equity, real estate fund formation and corporate M&A transactions. The “highly acclaimed” Mariëtte Turkenburg specialises in international tax. She advises multinationals on structuring their Dutch, EU or other international investments. Mark van Casteren focuses his practice on advising internationally operating groups and funds on structuring their Dutch, EU or other international acquisitions. Clients describe him as a “great tactician”. Ronald Wijs excels at European cross-border corporate tax planning and advises on the structuring of European private equity funds and investments for both European and American clients. In Rotterdam, Michiel van Kempen is “phenomenal” according to our sources. Chairman of the international tax practice group, he advises mainly international operating corporate clients, private equity and investment funds on all areas of international taxation. Simon Paul specialises in Luxembourg international tax law focusing on the structuring of financial products and finance structures as well as advising on mergers, takeovers and international corporate structuring. Christian Chéruy is based in the Brussels office and has a “wealth of expertise” on international and domestic corporate tax issues. He is renowned for his advice on the taxation of IP. The two offices in Switzerland each field one lawyer to this edition. In Geneva, Marieke Bakker is a “favourite with clients” while Jaap Zwaan in Zurich is a “definite inclusion” and praised for his practice which includes cross-border corporate tax planning. Etienne Spierts in Frankfurt concentrates his practice on cross-border investments and business activities between Germany and the Benelux. Loyens & Loeff receives further recognition outside of Europe. Head of the Hong Kong office Carola van den Bruinhorst is a “highly proficient” practitioner. She advises internationally operating groups and funds on their Dutch, EU or other international acquisitions. In Singapore, Pieter de Ridder is “greatly respected” and “highly sought after”. New York-based Veronique Sway provides clients with Luxembourg and Dutch tax advice on a wide variety on international transactions. She is “always excellent” according to sources.

Peter Callens of the Brussels office is highly recommended in the commercial litigation, corporate governance and M&A chapters for his broad expertise in corporate law. He is also a member of the firm’s renewable energy projects team and is “very active” in energy-related transactions in Belgium. He is joined in the M&A chapter by Freek Jonkhart. Based in Rotterdam, Jonkhart specialises in silent auctions, joint ventures, cross-border acquisitions and corporate governance.

The real estate chapter features three lawyers from the firm’s Netherlands’ offices including Bram Linnartz FRICS, a “star” in the marketplace with a deep understanding of property law and the real estate capital markets.

Three names also appear in the management labour and employment chapter. Brussels-based Filip Saelens has extensive experience in collective and individual employment law. He advises on transfers of undertakings, collective dismissals, reorganisations, employee benefits, social security, labour and social disputes and industrial relations. He is joined by Christian Willems, a “brilliant strategist” with over 30 years’ experience in the sector. In Amsterdam, Hermine Voûte is chairman of the employment taxes and employment law practice group. Her practice focuses on collective dismissals, employee representation and collective bargaining.
