LAWIN welcomed new management and practice group leaders for 2014 in accordance with its annual rotation of leadership roles. Žilvinas Zinkevicius will take on the role of chairperson for this term.

The firm’s corporate and M&A practice is a leader in the region. Recent assignments include advising NASDAQ-listed East Capital Explorer AB upon the acquisition of a majority stake in Starman, the leading cable TV, broadband internet and voice cable services provider in Estonia at a deal value of €107 million. Head of the practice group in Latvia Raimonds Slaidiņš is a “notable figure” in the market. He receives praise for his “creativity” and “timeliness”. Dovilė Burgienė heads the Lithuania corporate and M&A group, and is also noted for her experience in the energy sector. Filips Kļaviņš is the managing partner of the Riga office and is a “trusted adviser” on M&A transactions and corporate governance matters. Managing partner of the Tallinn office Peeter Lepik is a “specialist” in the area and is “highly sought after”. Rolandas Valiūnas has extensive experience in corporate law and is the managing partner of the Vilnius office. 

The energy practice at LAWIN receives high praise from peers and clients alike. The firm’s recent work includes drafting a legal analysis on the compliance of ownership unbundling of the gas transmission system operator to Estonian constitution and its international obligations, as well as representing the Republic of Lithuania in its energy strategy. Jaunius Gumbis is head of the Baltic and Lithuania industry and regulatory practice groups and is described as “meticulous” and “very sharp”. Ivars Slokenbergs is also highly regarded for his knowledge and experience in the field.

Sarmis Spilbergs is singled out in the life sciences field for his regulatory and transactional expertise. He is joined by Rūta Pumputienė and Pirkko-Liis Harkmaa who are both recognised for their “regulatory know-how”.

LAWIN’s competition law practice is “very active” and lawyers advise on dominance, cartels, mergers and concentrations, state aid, exclusive rights and private enforcement. Marius Juonys is a key figure in the practice and splits his time between the Brussels and Vilnius offices.

Highlights of 2013 include advising Mentor in the Baltics, an organisation headed by Queen Silvia of Sweden which engages in the protection of young people against drug abuse and the promotion of healthy living, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities Latvia, an NGO that makes professional medical services affordable and accessible to families with children.
