The firm has two core practice groups: a dispute resolution practice and a transactions practice.
Energy and natural resources:
The firm has advised and continues to provide legal services for the largest concessionaire in the recently concluded power privatisation scheme in Nigeria.
TRLPLAW’s transaction team is well equipped in advising companies on projects from initial stage of sourcing for angel investors to mezzanine financing and completion.
TRLPLAW, through its principal partner RA Oluyede, has consulted and acted in respect of high-profile matters in the United Kingdom involving the assets of Nigerian political figures.
The TRLPLAW litigation team has been involved in several high-profile political matters, including matters arising from the ascendancy of a majority group in one of the political parties in Nigeria to the leadership of the party in the southwest states. TRLPLAW successfully obtained judgments at the first courts of instance and the appellate courts to secure their clients’ positions in the political party.
TRLPLAW is also currently changing the legal landscape in Nigeria, pertaining to contempt of court, by engendering a clearer understanding of the distinctions procedurally and jurisprudentially between Civil and criminal contempt.
To illustrate TRLPLAW’s achievements, the firm recently enforced, at the Federal High Court, Abuja division, the payment of a 495 million naira judgment debt by committal proceedings in civil contempt. It also successfully moved the Federal High Court, Lagos division, to commit three top political actors to prison for six months each in respect of criminal contempt consisting of aiding and abetting the disobedience of the court orders, and through threat of committal for criminal contempt caused the reversal of a debt transfer transaction between a leading financial institution and a government agency.
Banking and financial services:
TRLPLAW is currently pursuing a landmark case that could shape the future of banking in Nigeria as it affects transaction charges in the banking industry.
Infrastructure development and public private partnerships (PPP):
Nigeria is in the process of vigorous infrastructure development through the engagement of the private sector. The PPP model is fast emerging as the preferred mechanism for this purpose by the Nigerian federal government, state governments and their agencies. TRLPLAW is at the forefront of providing legal advice and guidance to project stakeholders both in the public and private sectors in PPPs.
TRLPLAW’S clientele includes the largest power-generating concessionaire in Nigeria, a leading political party in Nigeria at the Federal and state levels, various oil and gas producing and exploration companies, financial institutions, top business and political figures in Nigeria.
