PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
Carey’s M&A practice is one of the most highly regarded in the region, with an excellent showing of lawyers from the firm in our research of the area. The “excellent” Francisco Guzman focuses his practice on the acquisition and sale of public and private companies, assisting both local and international clients. Pablo Iacobelli is co-head of the firm’s corporate and mergers and acquisitions group, and is a “highly sought-after advocate”. Alfonso Silva is noted for his M&A and telecoms and media expertise, and leads the firm’s corporate and telecom groups. He splits his practice between M&A and the regulatory and transactional aspects of telecoms law and is “one of the best” in the market. The “world-class” Jaime Carey is also listed in multiple editions, having been selected for inclusion in our capital markets, corporate governance, corporate tax and banking publications on top of his entry in our M&A guide. Carey is the managing partner of the firm and also co-heads its tax department.
Also listed in our banking edition is Diego Peralta, co-head of the firm’s banking and finance group, he specialises in structuring of financing for businesses, both from a banking and a commercial perspective. He is described as “a pleasure to work with”. Fellow co-head of the banking and finance group and head of the project financing group Juan Guillermo Levine is noted for both his banking and project finance experience. He is described as “highly dedicated to clients’ needs”.
Oscar Aitken is also featured in our project finance edition for his work in financing for construction and real estate developments. His clients enjoy his “excellent technical abilities” and he is also recommended in the areas of public procurement and management labour and employment. Juan Francisco Mackenna heads the firm’s energy group and focuses his project finance practice on energy projects. He is the “go-to name” in the field and is also listed for his energy and mining work.
Energy is another area in which Carey’s lawyers have excelled in our research. Maria Fernanda Carvajal co-heads the firm’s banking and finance, project finance and energy practices, and focuses her practice on LNG and gas projects, including financing and regulatory work. She is “very technically astute” and gives “sound advice” to clients. Rafael Vergara is co-head of the firm’s natural resources, energy and environment group, and dedicates his time to mining, water rights and project financing work. He also features in our environment and mining guides.
Carey was recently recognised by our sister publication Latin Lawyer as a “leading light” in South America for its pro bono work, proving its strong commitment to the practice. One of the firm’s main projects is Fonoinmigrantes, a hotline phone service that offers legal assistance to immigrants in Chile, developed in conjunction with law students from Universidad de Chile and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. The firm is also active in criminal cases on a pro bono basis.
For the coming year, Carey simply aims to maintain and enhance its already impressive standing in the market, by growing and strengthening areas and practices as the market demands. The firm also strives to make sure that client needs are kept at the forefront of its work.
