PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
The firm is home to several practitioners who are noted for their broad practices and extensive experience. Sergio Michelsen is recognised for his expertise in a total of five practice areas: banking, capital markets, corporate governance, M&A and project finance. He advises local and foreign companies as well as private equity funds and is particularly noted for his expertise in the telecommunications, media and technology fields. He is a “sensational” M&A lawyer who is praised for his “diligent approach” to matters. Managing partner of the firm Carlos Umaña Trujillo specialises in banking, competition, corporate governance, M&A and public procurement. He is commended for his “concise and effective advice” and peers note his “impressive roster of clients”. Carlos Fradique-Méndez is also noted for his corporate governance, M&A and project finance expertise. His representative experience includes advising Pacific Rubiales, first foreign private issuer, in the registration of their stocks at the Colombian Stock Market and at the RNVE.
Aviation “expert” Álvaro Iván Cala Carrizosa advises clients including American Airlines, British Airways and Interjet among others, while Luis-Alfredo Barragán Arango is noted for his “superb” litigation skills. Head of the litigation, arbitration and insolvency practice he has significant experience represents clients in proceedings in Colombia and is singled out for his asset recovery and commercial litigation experience in particular.
Alejandro García leads the firm’s competition and integrations practice and is an “accomplished lawyer” according to peers. Head of the tax, transfer pricing and wealth management, trust and estates teams José Andrés Romero is a “top talent” in the corporate tax sector. He has particular experience in the application of treaties to avoid double taxation and in the implementation of sophisticated tax structures.
