With a strong regulatory focus, the firm excels in the area of environment law and fields 11 individuals to the corresponding chapter. This edition marks the fourth consecutive year that the firm is recognised as the world’s leading environment law firm, attesting to the firm’s investment in this practice since the emergence of US environmental legislation in the 1970s. The strength of the firm’s practice in this field is down to the skills and knowledge of its individual lawyers. DC-based William Brownell is a long-standing member of the firm and a specialist on climate change regulation, clean air regulation and environmental licensing. His expertise is “second to none” and he is a “distinguished” figure in the market. Managing partner of the DC office, Andrea Bear Field has more than 35 years’ experience in environmental law. Her practice focuses on representing clients in federal and state enforcement actions brought by the US Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Air Act. Alongside her, Norman Fichthorn has an “impressive reputation” for appellate litigation under the Clean Air Act and matters concerning global climate change. His clients include companies and trade associations in the electric generation industry and manufacturing industries. Kathy Robb in the New York office represents water districts, developers, electric utilities, investors, chemical manufacturers and paper companies and is considered “at the top of her game, especially in water law”. Lucas Bergkamp represents the firm’s Brussels office and is recommended for his knowledge of plant and product-related environmental law, chemical law, pesticides and biocides, contaminated sites regulation and waste regulation, among others.
Five practitioners feature in the internet, e-commerce and data protection chapter. In London, Bridget Treacy is “very well regarded” for her expertise in privacy, data protection, information governance and e-commerce. She is joined by Rosemary Jay of the same office, a “frontrunner” in the field noted for her considerable expertise in privacy law. Jay calls upon her experience at the legal office of the Data Protection Registrar, now the Information Commissioner, which she headed for 12 years. Brussels-based Wim Nauwelaerts represents clients on all aspects of privacy compliance as well as advising on the privacy implications of cross-border M&A transactions and reviewing websites and online privacy policies.
Competition is a further strength of the firm and three practitioners feature prominently in the corresponding chapter. In DC, practice head D Bruce Hoffman is highly recommended. A former Federal Trade Commission deputy director of the Bureau of Competition, he has extensive experience in merger control and conduct cases. Ray V Hartwell III is a “prominent practitioner” in the legal marketplace and excels in internal investigations and merger control. By invitation of the Department of Justice, he participated as one of the three US non-governmental advisers at the International Competition Network’s Cartel Worksop in Yokohoma, Japan, in 2010. Thomas G Slater Jr is chair emeritus for the firm’s litigation, labour and competition practices and is based in Richmond, Virginia. He has more than 30 years’ experience in competition trials and has represented numerous Fortune 100 companies.
Hunton & Williams’ long-standing experience in the legal marketplace combined with its modern outlook enables it to deliver solutions to complex matters with confidence, while also enabling the firm to guide clients into the 21st century.
