Hogan Lovells boasts a “first-class” IP and life sciences department. Andreas von Falck leads the international intellectual property, media and technology group and “always comes up with a solution” for his clients, who hail from the life sciences, pharmaceutical and infrastructure markets. Stephen Bennett is highly nominated in both our patents and life sciences: IP chapters, and is widely regarded as a “pragmatic and innovative” presence in the market. He predominantly acts in patent litigation for innovators regarding extensions and protection from generics. Dispute specialist Klaas Bisschop has represented numerous multinational pharmaceutical companies in the Dutch and European courts and Milan-based Giovanni Ghirardi is a “brilliant technical lawyer”. He specialises in patents in the life sciences sector. “Superstar” Bert Oosting advises and acts for a prestigious client base including GlaxoSmithKline and Bayer and his scientific expertise means he is a “trusted resource” for regulatory advice as well as patent litigation. On the product liability side, “undisputed leader” Ina Brock is co-head of the global life sciences industry sector team and is “globally renowned” for her knowledge and experience. She is highly sought after for complex cross-border product liability proceedings, including multiparty litigation, mass torts and pharmaceutical liability. Eugene Chen also features in our product liability defence and life sciences chapters. He has represented Asian, US and European companies in complex international disputes. International product liability network head John Meltzer is “very well respected” and “extensively experienced” in acting for large life sciences companies in claims, as well as counselling clients on disputes on product safety. He also frequently publishes articles and speaks at seminars on the topic, as well as leading a European study into the Product Liability Directive. Francesca Rolla leads the Italian product liability practice group and is trusted by clients at all stages of proceedings. Cécile Derycke is “lauded” for her litigation expertise, having acted in numerous multi-jurisdictional cases in her capacity as head of the life sciences litigation team in Paris.

Jacques Derenne leads the “formidable” competition team in Brussels, and is rated for his “practical approach to very complex issues”. Alongside him, the “extremely intelligent” Paris Anestis is recognised for his depth of knowledge across a full range of competition issues. Washington, DC-based Joseph Krauss devotes his practice to the economic aspects of competition regulation and is noted by clients as “focused and dedicated”. Competition “powerhouse” Janet McDavid cements her reputation as a global leader in competition law by frequently speaking and writing on the topic.
Our insurance and reinsurance research highlighted 12 “superb” Hogan Lovells lawyers. In London, Nick Atkins and Victor Fornasier are praised for their experience in international insurance litigation, the latter having advised a huge range of national and global corporations. Beata Balas-Noszczyk heads up the financial institutions group in Warsaw and is “held in high regard” by peers and clients alike. A strong presence in the European insurance market is maintained by Spanish insurance team head Joaquin Ruiz Echauri and Paolo Ricci, who leads the corporate insurance team in Italy and is regarded as an “expert on national and international issues”. Thomas Rouhette heads the French dispute resolution practice and has a “stellar” reputation for insurance work. He features in an outstanding four practice areas in total, including commercial litigation, product liability defence and life sciences. In the US, David Hensler is a “top-notch” commercial litigator and David Newmann is “an exceptional attorney for complex insurance matters”.
The “highly respected” aviation team fields “finance expert” Robert Fugard and head of asset finance Robin Hallam. The latter is “extremely intelligent” and has advised leading aircraft companies on innovative financing techniques. Richard Jadot is head of the banking and finance team in Paris and is “incredibly focused” in his advice to airlines on finance structures and operating leases, noted for his ability to “present complex issues in a comprehensible way”. In the US, notable names are “star litigators” Trevor Jefferies, Bruce Oakley and Thad Thano Dameris, who co-chairs the firm’s transportation sector team.
