Amarchand Mangaldas offers clients services across a broad spectrum of areas and is particularly noted for its expertise in banking and finance, and competition law.

Cyril Shroff in Mumbai and Shardul Shroff in New Delhi are the firm’s “best-known names”. Each enjoys a “spectacular reputation” in the marketplace; the former is recognised for his expertise in eight practice areas of law, while the latter achieves seven nominations. Shardul Shroff recently led a team advising Vedanta Resources on its US$1.70 billion bond offering – the largest by an Indian corporate group. He was assisted by Prashant Gupta, who is recognised for his “sensational work” in the capital markets. He represents both issuers and underwriters in equity and debt capital market transactions including IPOs, rights issues and offerings of securities to institutional investors. Yash Ashar and Niloufer Lam are also singled out for their expertise in the capital markets area. L Viswanathan in Mumbai specialises in banking, project finance and public procurement. He is “recommended without hesitation” by clients.

Pallavi Shroff heads the firm’s competition group and is “spectacular”. She specialises in dispute resolution and is noted for her “expert handling” of arbitration and litigation mattes. The firm’s competition practice is home to some of India’s “great talents” including Naval Satarawala Chopra, Harman Singh Sandhu and Shweta Shroff Chopra. Also listed is John Handoll, who joined the firm in October 2012 and advises on European competition law.

Some of the firm’s largest engagements of 2013 included advising DLF Limited on the biggest IPP in India, assisting on the Indian leg of the global acquisition by ARRIS group of the “home business”from Motorola Mobility, and acting as deal counsel to Blackstone in its acquisition of 100 per cent of the shareholding of two sea-plane operating companies in the Republic of Maldives.

One of the firm’s proudest pro bono achievements of 2013 was providing expert consultation to the Justice Verma Committee, which was appointed to recommend amendments to the criminal laws on rape. At least 70 of the firm’s lawyers dedicated more than 40 hours to studying the existing law and suggesting changes. The firm submitted an 80-plus page report to the Justice Verma Committee and some of the suggestions were integrated in the final recommendation of the committee which was presented on 23 January 2013.

The firm has recently begun setting up a committee to ensure prevention and redress of sexual harassment, as required under the new Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013. In addition, the senior management team has initiated consultations to seek input from employees on how best to guarantee women’s safety and avoid sexual harassment.

Amarchand Mangaldas plans to open its eighth office in north India later this year to bring the firm’s lawyers closer to their clients in the upcoming business district of Gurgaon in Haryana. The new office is part of the firm’s significant growth projection for the next few years, which also focuses closely on the promotion of home-grown talent.
