Holland & Knight has more than 75 years of experience in aviation law. The aviation team assists clients with transactional, regulatory, investigation and litigation matters. John Pritchard is “one of the best” in the finance field with “unparalleled” knowledge in the area of asset-based financing. In the San Francisco office, William Piels is also “very active” in the field and has extensive experience in a broad range of transactions in the leasing and financing area. In the regulatory and contentious fields, deputy chair of the aviation team Anita Mosner is a “leading light”. She represents airlines, airports and other related businesses in complex business disputes and operational problems. In New York, Alan Reitzfeld is “highly recommended” for his practice involving aviation litigation. He is also recognised for “outstanding” work done in his other area of expertise – information technology.

Members of the private wealth services group advise a number of high net worth individuals on estate and tax planning as well as representation in complex probate litigation if required. Leigh-Alexandra Basha is chair of the firm’s international private client practice and a “big player” in the field. She focuses her practice on domestic and foreign estate and tax planning. Kevin Packman chairs the offshore compliance team and is an “expert” in the area of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts Reporting. The “talented” Andrew Weinstein handles complex domestic and international tax planning and compliance matters for ultra high net worth individuals.

The firm’s construction industry practice comprises nearly 70 lawyers and deals with the full array of construction matters across the globe. Andrew Stephenson represents owners, architect-engineers, general contractors and subcontractors in all phases of construction projects. He is praised for his “responsiveness and flexibility”. Stephen Shapiro is noted for his “first rate” litigation skills. He has significant experience in issues surrounding building defects and mould.

Holland & Knight breaks the technology sector down into a number of different practice areas, all with leading professionals worldwide. Richard Raysman concentrates on computer law, outsourcing and complex technology transactions and has “fantastic industry knowledge”. Jeffrey Seul has represented the likes of Ericsson as part of his corporate practice and is a “standout” individual according to sources.

Beginning with founder and chairman emeritus Chesterfield Smith, Holland & Knight has maintained a community vision and believes in a “professional duty to provide free legal services to people in need”. The public and charitable service department coordinates the firm’s efforts into three strands: pro bono, community service and charitable giving. The community services team is composed of lawyers from various offices and focuses solely on high-impact pro bono litigation. Created in 1999, the Chesterfield Smith Fellowship Programme is still going today and selects two junior lawyers per year to work on a year-long apprenticeship at full pay on pro bono matters. These, along with a range of other initiatives, highlight the value the firm places on charitable giving and community service.

Holland & Knight has established a firm-wide diversity council along with affinity groups and local diversity committees. Examples of affinity groups include the Native American, veterans and LGBT groups which address the distinct challenges and opportunities that specific groups face. The firm has also implemented a number of mentoring and other diversity-related programmes. A significant branch of the women’s initiative is the Rising Star programme which selects a group of women annually to participate in a programme of leadership, marketing, management and professional skills development.

The start of 2014 saw the significant expansion of the firm’s Portland office with five new partner hires. The new additions introduce a new practice in lawyer ethics, risk management and regulation law and appellate law. With this development, Holland & Knight affirms its vow to broadening the scope of services offered to clients nationwide.
