Marking its first leadership change in 10 years, Steptoe & Johnson appointed Phil West a chairman in January 2014. He succeeds Roger Warin, who has become chairman emeritus.

In the same month, the firm opened its 10th office in Palo Alto, which allows the firm to better serve existing clients in the region as well as expand its services, particularly in intellectual property, cybersecurity, tax, litigation and technology. Moreover, in what is already a significant year for the firm, 2014 has also seen Steptoe & Johnson make six partner hires which has further expanded the firm’s litigation and intellectual property practices. This news comes on the back of steady growth in 2013 which saw hires to the firm’s international and regulations compliance group in London, patent litigation practice in Chicago office, and tax and corporate finance groups and white-collar criminal defence practice in Washington, DC.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
The firm has an established and experienced energy practises in the US. Steven Brose, who is head of the regulatory and industry affairs department, is an “excellent” lawyer with a “superlative” knowledge of the oil and natural gas pipeline industries. Steven Reed is focused on US energy regulation. He represents numerous major US oil pipeline companies in proceedings before state regulatory agencies and the US courts of appeals. Daniel Poynor is similarly specialised in the oil pipeline regulatory sector, in which he is praised by clients for his “diligent approach”. David Raskin practises in the electric power industry. He is especially noted for his advice on compliance matters relating to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Trade and customs is another stand out practice of the firm. Mark Moran is lauded by clients and peers for his “excellence” in the field of international trade litigation. Most recently, he has been representing US and European multinationals in Chinese trade remedy proceedings. Richard Cunningham is an extremely well regarded lawyer in the field, especially for his resolution of market-access problems and other international trade issues. Matthew Yeo is a specialist on World Trade Organization matters, while Edward Krauland is highly experienced in a wide range of international trade matters economic sanctions, defence and nuclear export controls, commissions, anti-money laundering compliance, anti-boycott and FCPA compliance and enforcement, and cross-border government procurement regulations.
Several of the firm’s lawyers are also noted for their “depth of expertise” in insurance and reinsurance. James Rocap III boasts an “impressive level of knowledge” in the field and focuses primarily on civil litigation, with an emphasis on large insurance coverage disputes. Angus Rodger is head of the insurance and reinsurance team in London. He is active in national and international commercial arbitrations, and his recent activity includes representing the insurance market in an LCIA arbitration over a £350 million Bermuda Form claim.
In 2011, the firm recorded more than 36,000 pro bono hours. Although many of Steptoe’s lawyers are regularly engaged in pro bono activities, it is a core objective of the firm to obtain 100 per cent participation. Action for Children of Trafficking is a signature project for the firm, in which lawyers provide direct assistance to victims of international child trafficking and address the systemic obstacles that confront the victims.
Since taking on the role, West has created a management committee that will oversee the budget, recruitment, growth of the firm’s practice groups and its international reach. West also plans to arrange an external review of the firm’s operations to identify what can be done to further expand its business, in line with Steptoe & Johnson’s strong commitment to strengthening its collaborative partnership across its international network for the benefit of its clients.
