Cohausz & Florack, a partnership of patent attorneys and attorneys-at-law founded in 1954, is one of Germany’s foremost boutiques offering comprehensive services in the technology and science arena, especially IP. The firm’s reputation is originally founded on its rich history in patent litigation and prosecution. In the 1920s the firm’s founder, Werner Cohausz, represented patent owners in perhaps the key patent battle of the times: the “talkie war” involving the biggest movie companies at that time.
The firm is based in Düsseldorf, Germany, and has a staff of around 100 people.
As inter-disciplinary law firm Cohausz & Florack combines legal, technical and scientific expertise in all fields of technology and science such as, inter alia, mechanical engineering, materials, mechanics and mining, electrical engineering, information technology, physics, chemistry, pharmaceuticals and life sciences. The firm focuses on all aspects of commercialising and protecting technology and intellectual property and represents clients in technically complex and IP-related court cases and arbitrations. Cohaus & Florack also represents and advises their clients in unfair competition law, copyright and all related fields of law such as licensing, distribution, R&D cooperations and other contractual matters relating to the exploitation of intangible assets.
Cohausz & Florack has a special expertise in conception, application, prosecution and administration of comprehensive protective rights portfolios for national and international clients, complex contract negotiations, contractual matters, court litigation, and arbitration proceedings. Any activity for a client is solution focussed, since we appreciate the clients need to get matters resolved as quickly as appropriate under the circumstances with an eye on minimalising a drain on client resources.
The specialised attorneys of Cohausz & Florack take an interdisciplinary approach. Each task is handled by the best-suited specialists. To assure stability, reliability and high-quality results, each client has their own contact at the firm.
Located in Düsseldorf – the EU’s foremost region for patent litigation – the firm offers multidisciplinary teams that act for blue-chips as well as small and medium-sized companies, of which many are world leaders in their technological niche. Whenever and wherever intellectual property is at stake, Cohausz & Florack is available to support its clients with the relevant expertise. Our client’s rights and interests outside Germany are preserved and enforced through a network of correspondence attorneys, which has evolved over many decades and is constantly being expanded and assessed.
Cohausz & Florack is also a partner to other German and foreign law firms who are not as deeply involved in technology and intellectual property, or who need a (German) co-counsel for any other reason. In most cases we add value to the technical advice or representation provided by our partner firms to their clients. However, we provide also technical expert witness services in international arbitration or foreign court proceedings. Partners of Cohausz & Florack act as court appointed experts in German IP litigations.
