As part of a broader reform project, Stefano Simontacchi and Marcello Giustiniani were elected as managing partners. Simontacchi is head of the international tax and transfer pricing team, while Giustiniani is the department of employment law’s coordinator. Both will continue to practise in their respective areas while holding their new positions.
Having maintained its place as one of the top legal entities in Italy with offices in Genoa, Milan and Rome, the firm also has established practices in Brussels and London. This year it has continued to strengthen its ties with other independent firms across Europe, with partnerships with firms based in France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain and Portugal.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
The firm comes highly commended in our research for M&A and corporate governance. Founding partner Franco Bonelli splits his time between the firm’s Genoa and Milan offices. He specialises in M&A transactions in the banking, chemical and industrial sectors, and is seem by many as a “leading light” in the field. He is also highly commended for his corporate governance practice which sees him advising both major companies and local governments, and he is also recognised for his insolvency and restructuring expertise. Fellow founding partner Sergio Erede has an “enviable reputation” within the market. He has overseen the mergers and acquisitions of numerous large companies, and also specialises in privatisations. The “incredibly talented” Umberto Nicodano is a member of the firm’s partners’ executive committee and is coordinator of the firm’s internationalisation strategy. His practice focuses on M&A transactions of listed and unlisted companies, and often works with banking, fashion, automotive and insurance clients.
Another area in which the firm excels is competition law. Massimo Merola is the managing partner of the firm’s Brussels office and the scientific director of the firm’s European law and antitrust group. He has experience appearing before the European Commission and national agencies and sanctioning bodies in various EU member states. Peers describe him as a “dedicated practitioner” and a “formidable opponent”. Maurizio Pappalardo divides his time between the firm’s Brussels and Milan offices, specialising in EU and Italian competition law. He focuses his practice on the internet, energy and agriculture sectors as well as specialising in litigation. He is also highlighted for his “outstanding ability to adapt to a wide range of matters”.
Additional practitioners who come highly recommended include Catia Tomasetti, who is highlighted for her energy, project finance and public procurement expertise. She is the coordinator of the firm’s banking and finance department and is responsible for the project finance team. Clients describe her as “a valuable asset” with “a positive attitude and sound judgement”. The “incredibly experienced” Antonio Crivellaro is also listed in multiple practice areas namely arbitration and construction. He specialises in disputes related to international procurement and construction contracts, foreign investment and international commercial contacts.
