De Brauw has a prominent M&A practice which over the last year has delivered effective strategic advice regarding innovative joint ventures and co-creation partnerships to clients such as ASML. Its results-oriented approach has certainly proved fruitful as the firm boasts a wide range of clients including 40 per cent of the 100 largest companies in the Netherlands. We list seven “outstanding” lawyers in the M&A chapter. Pierre Nijnens, head of the firm’s M&A capital markets practice, is an “excellent” practitioner who “always has a clear understanding of the bigger picture and wider issues”. He is joined by the “talented” Arne Grimme and the “first-class” Martin van Olffen. Grimme has a broad practice which focuses on public and private M&A including private equity transactions, while van Olffen advises on defence strategies and assists with negotiating settlement agreements. The pair recently worked with ASML on their high profile customer co-investment programme. Ton Schutte is a “leading strategist” with particular expertise in dealing with cross-border deals.

Three practitioners are listed in both our M&A and corporate governance chapters, demonstrating the firm’s eminence in both of these fields. Jaap Winter is a “prominent figure” and advises family-owned companies on a variety of governance issues. He is chairman of the former EU high-level group of company law experts. Paul Cronheim is “incredibly knowledgeable” and “client-focused”. His practice covers M&A transactions as well as corporate governance and shareholder matters. Cronheim also has a strong dispute resolution practice and is listed as a “leading” practitioner in our commercial litigation chapter. Bernard Roelvink is a “trusted adviser” to many domestic and international companies. He is particularly experienced in contested public takeovers, disposals and joint ventures and is also listed in our oil and gas chapter for his work in this industry.

De Brauw has an exceptional capital markets practice and is a “trusted” IPO adviser to many large Dutch companies. In 2012, the firm advised on both of the two IPOs on the NYSE and Euronext Amsterdam. Its respected capital markets team is represented by two “fantastic” lawyers, Jan Willem Hoevers and Joost Schutte. Hoevers is a favourite among our respondents for his “technical ability” in cross-border equity capital market transactions. He was the lead partner on the IPO of Sara Lee’s spin-off coffee and tea company, D E Master Blenders 1753. Schutte is a “hard -working” practitioner who provides “practical and accessible advice”. He advised the underwriters on the IPO of Dutch cable operator Ziggo on Euronext Amsterdam. The firm also excels in its work in the banking and financial sector. Jan Marten Van Dijk is “brilliant” and “always well informed on market changes”. He has a broad practice which includes bank and acquisition financing transactions and debt restructurings. Berend Crans is a “superb” banking lawyer whose “creative problem-solving” has impressed our respondents. He is also listed in the aviation and project finance chapters.

De Brauw’s competition practice is renowned for its success in getting clearance for the most complicated transactions from the European Commission and the Dutch Competition Authority. Managing partner of the firm Martijn Snoep is a “leading practitioner” in competition and is highly recommended during our research. He has a broad practice which covers litigation before European and Dutch courts, cartel investigations and transactional work. Joining him is Jolling de Pree, a former M&A lawyer, whose “tactical litigation style” and “shrewd mind” have been praised by our respondents. His practice also includes cartel investigations and merger cases. Erik Pijnacker Hordijk has appeared in over 100 cases before the European courts and is “widely respected” for his knowledge of EU and Dutch competition law. He also features in the public procurement chapter.

De Brauw has a “highly rated” dispute resolution practice and we list two lawyers who excel in commercial litigation. Ruud Hermans, head of the corporate litigation practice, has more than 25 years of experience in complex cross-border disputes for multiple parties and is “the one to call in the Netherlands”. Marnix Leijten has particular expertise in dealing with clients from the electricity, oil and gas markets. He was recently involved in a dispute involving GasTerra and Italian energy company Eni where he secured a particularly favourable outcome for his client.

Two further lawyers of note are Koen Limperg and Bommel van der Bend. Limperg is a “distinguished expert” in trademark law and works on high profile, cross-border, complex disputes. He also features in the product liability chapter. Van der Bend is an “influential” practitioner specialising in construction. He advises on contractual issues for large-scale projects in the oil, gas and electricity industries and is additionally recognised for his expertise in public procurement.

De Brauw fields further lawyers in our internet, e-commerce and data protection, oil and gas, corporate tax, private funds, environment, patents and real estate chapters. Its impressive standing in the legal market is due to its dedicated and client-focused practitioners, whose expertise spans a full range of practice areas.
