International trade law services: Appleton Luff specialise in international trade law, including dispute settlement. We advise governments and businesses on how to benefit financially from the international trade system. We work in all WTO-related areas, and with free trade agreements (NAFTA, AEC, EPAs, etc) and customs unions (EU and MERCOSUR). Our services encompass all areas of trade and investment law: trade remedy cases, technical barriers to trade, customs rules, WTO dispute settlement, EU Court litigation, international arbitration, regional integration and market access actions.
Litigation and arbitration: Members of Appleton Luff serve as sole arbitrator, party appointed arbitrator, counsel and co-counsel in ICC, AAA, EDF and ad hoc arbitrations in disputes concerning international trade, development financing, intellectual property, licensing, agency agreements, mining, construction and sovereigns. Our attorneys have extensive experience before the European and US courts, WTO panels and the appellate body and in investor–state disputes.
Business services: Members of Appleton Luff regularly negotiate international deals in a wide variety of business sectors throughout Europe and Africa, with a strong focus on Eastern Europe and the East African community.
Trade remedies practice: Appleton Luff’s trade remedies practice is extensive. Our attorneys have experience in over 300 trade remedy proceedings (anti-dumping, countervailing duty/anti-subsidy and safeguards measures) conducted in all major jurisdictions including the US, EU, China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Turkey, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, South Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Korea and Russia. The team has experts located in each of the firm’s six offices and works with associated consultancies throughout the world.
International sanctions: Appleton Luff assists companies and persons to manage sanctions, and challenge them, where required, before the courts, the UN Security Council’s sanctions committee and in diplomatic forums.

They also teach in universities and academic centres throughout the world: Dr David Luff is guest professor of trade law at the College of Europe, at the Universities of Liège and Lille. Ed Sim is an adjunct associate professor of ASEAN Law at the National University of Singapore and teaches at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta. Dr Arthur Appleton is an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS-Europe) where he teaches international trade law. Dr Appleton also teaches at the World Trade Institute in Berne (on whose board he serves), and Drs Appleton, Luff and Rios Herran teach in the International Economic Law and Policy programme (IELPO) of the University of Barcelona. Patrick Macrory and Swithin Munyantwali teach at the International Law Institute in Kampala and Washington, DC. Finally, Dr Appleton is a senior trade and investment consultant for the World Bank and Dr Luff trains European Commission officials in all areas of trade law.
