FIRM OF THE YEAR – FINLAND
Roschier is our leading firm in Finland for the eighth consecutive year, with 36 inclusions in 19 chapters. The firm has a unique geographical footprint with offices in Finland and Sweden, as well as a strong network of “best friend” firms in Denmark, Norway, the Baltics and Russia. Roschier is a full-service law firm and continues to expand: in October 2012 it merged with IP firm Benjon, thus strengthening its practice in this area. In addition, it has recently announced plans to set up a tax and corporate structuring practice in Sweden. The firm provides a comprehensive, cross-border service to clients and is home to some of the best lawyers in the region, who continue to impress with their approachability, technical ability and in-depth local knowledge. It is easy to see why Roschier remains the leading firm in Finland.

Roschier is highly represented in our management labour and employment chapter where we feature four “inspirational” lawyers who are predominantly based in the firm’s Helsinki office. The firm’s employment practice prides itself on the excellent communication skills of its partners. Roschier’s geographical footprint also plays a useful role for clients as it often matches up exactly with their Nordic/Baltic HR region. Eva Nordman-Rajaharju is a “well-known” and “much-respected” employment practitioner whose practice also focuses on dispute resolution. Nina Isokorpi, head of the employment and benefits department, is a “superb” lawyer and a “trusted employment adviser”. Kaj Swanljung, senior counsel at the firm, has “extensive experience” in the area and “is dedicated to his practice and his clients”. He is also listed in our real estate chapter. Magnus Wallander is “the one to contact” in Stockholm with his “pre-eminent” practice in employment and benefits.
Following its merger with IP boutique firm Benjon in October 2012, Roschier now boasts a one-stop shop for all patent and trademark matters. Recently, the firm successfully represented Langh Ship in a major patent litigation against two Dutch shipping companies before the District Court of Helsinki. The firm achieves four listings in the life sciences chapter. Rainer Hilli is listed in the intellectual property section of our life sciences chapter as well as our chapters on patents and trademarks, and is “one of the strongest intellectual property lawyers in Finland” with a “clear passion for this area”. He is currently the managing partner of the firm. Intellectual property specialist Johanna Lilja, is a “high flier” and a clear favourite among our respondents. Mikael Segercrantz is a “leading expert” in both intellectual property and marketing and consumer law. He is listed in both the intellectual property and regulatory sections of our life sciences chapter.
The firm also has a strong presence in competition with three lawyers listed. Roschier has a full-service practice including cartel and EU investigations and merger filings. Lawyers in this firm have a particular specialism in claims relating to abuse of a dominant position and they work for many market leaders. In Helsinki, Niko Hukkinen and Christian Wik work on EU competition law issues and both have a particular interest in the green economy and energy sector. Hukkinen is a “dynamic” practitioner and a “strong young talent” while Wik heads the practice area and is highly rated by our respondents for his “in-depth knowledge” and “active presence in the sector”. Based in Stockholm, Lars Johansson is a “distinguished” dispute resolution lawyer with “significant expertise” in competition.
At its core, Roschier is a high end corporate firm with a superb M&A practice. Partners base the firm’s success in this area on its unique geographical position, capacity and its in-depth understanding of local culture. Roschier is very active in the M&A market and has recently acted on high-value deals for clients such as Vattenfall, TDF Group, Nokia and Old Mutual. Helsinki-based Jon Unnérus is an “intellectually gifted practitioner” who is “particularly astute at solving complex problems efficiently”. He has a “leading” practice in M&A and private equity. Another “outstanding” M&A practitioner is Jens Bengtsson who leads the practice from Stockholm and has a “brilliant understanding of technical details”. Axel Calissendorff, a former managing partner at the firm, is “one of the top Swedish M&A lawyers”. He is also listed in our corporate governance chapter for his successful practice in this field and is on the advisory board for prestigious organisations such as Save the Children. Joining him in this field is Paula Linna, a “well-respected” practitioner featuring in both the corporate governance and capital markets chapters.
Two lawyers at Roschier stand out for their “terrific” work in dispute resolution. Both Claes Lundblad and Petri Taivalkoski are included in our arbitration and commercial litigation chapters. The “first class” Lundblad is an “excellent” arbitrator and a “very sharp” litigator who is a former Swedish member of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce and leads the firm’s dispute resolution practice. Taivalkoski is a “great strategist” and “instinctively knows which moves are in the client’s best interests”. He has recently become a board member of the Arbitration Institute of the Finland Chamber of Commerce. As well as featuring in the arbitration and litigation chapters, Taivalkoski is also listed as a “leading specialist” in our chapter on business crime defence. Roschier’s dispute resolution team is one of the biggest in the Nordic region and works on complex international disputes under various regimes in areas including patents and competition.
Other lawyers at the firm of particular note include Mikko Manner and Gunnar Westerlund. Manner is an “outstanding” dispute resolution practitioner who has been chosen for inclusion in our internet, e-commerce and data protection and regulatory communications chapters. Westerlund is a “gifted financial adviser” and is listed in our banking and project finance chapters.
Its additional listings earn Roschier the accolade of being the best-represented firm in Finland.
