The past year also saw the firm engaged in high profile deals including advising on the US$1.18 billion acquisition by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan of SeaCube Container Leasing, one of the world’s largest container leasing companies, and in Hong Kong, acting as Cayman Islands counsel in the US$3.7 billion privatisation of Focus Media Holding by way of merger. PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
The firm’s insurance sector expertise is “second to none” and lawyers advise insurers on every aspect of their business from incorporation to IPO. Recent activity includes advising on Markel’s US$3.13 billion acquisition of Alterra Capital Holdings Limited, pursuant to which Markel sought to consolidate its specialty insurance business on the back of Alterra’s reinsurance and large account insurance portfolios. Narinder Hargun is head of the litigation department in Bermuda and specialises in insurance and reinsurance disputes. He is “very active” in arbitration proceedings in the field and peers praise his “deep knowledge” and “sound advice”. Robin Mayor heads the Bermuda office’s insolvency and restructuring practice. She is “sensational” at handling complex, cross-border reorganisations. David Doyle stands out for his experience in this sector and is considered a “leading authority” on segregated accounts insurance companies. Michael Frith concentrates his practice on insurance regulatory and transactional matters and is “greatly valued” by clients.
Conyers Dill & Pearman has a “well respected” private client and trust practice advising on the laws of Bermuda, BVI and the Cayman Islands. Key names include Alec Anderson and Peter Pearman. Anderson is the global head of the practice and is a “trusted adviser” to clients on the restructuring, modification and variation of trusts. He is also active in trust dispute resolution. Pearman’s recent experience includes advising on the impact of new French legislation in relation to Bermuda situs trustees and the trusts of which they act as trustee. He is “great to work with” and “highly creative”.
Aviation is a further field in which the firm excels with a strong finance practice. Lawyers at the firm advise on cross-border financings, structured financings, securitisations, aircraft purchases, sale-leasebacks, IPOs and other capital market transactions and sharia-compliant arrangements. Stephen Rossiter is a “solid practitioner” known for his extensive work aircraft finance, leasing and registration. The “talented” Julie McLean advises investment banks, airlines, leasing companies and investment managers on aircraft financings and registrations. Matthew Stocker recently joined the firm and is located in the Cayman Islands office. He is “superb” at aircraft financings and is highly praised by peers and clients alike.
Conyers Dill & Pearman fields a strong private funds team including Robert Briant, head of the BVI office and an “expert” on hedge funds. Bermuda-based Anthony Whaley specialises in the establishment of hedge funds, mutual funds, unit trusts, partnerships and other investment funds.
Further praise goes to Mark Forté who is noted for his commercial litigation, asset recovery and insolvency and restructuring expertise, and Jeffrey Elkinson who specialises in arbitration, commercial litigation and construction. “Star individual” Nigel Meeson QC earns more listings in our research than any other lawyer in the firm; he is recognised for his arbitration, asset recovery, commercial litigation and insurance and reinsurance expertise.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
One of the firm’s proudest moments of 2013 was seeing the Bermuda office come together to raise over $37,000 to the Bermuda Red Cross in support of the Typhoon Haiyan Appeal. Bermuda is home to a large Filipino community and the firm was proud to be able to contribute in the efforts to provide food, clothing, shelter, first aid and emotional support to those in need.
