Sullivan & Cromwell once again fields an exceptionally strong international financial practice in both banking and capital markets. Rodgin Cohen has a pervasive influence over the financial sector stretching back almost half a century, and is widely recognised as one of the “world’s greatest banking lawyers”. Cohen’s renowned practice primarily focuses on acquisition, regulatory, enforcement and securities law for international and domestic financial institutions, and corporate governance matters for a wide variety of businesses. Michael Wiseman, the managing partner of the firm’s financial services group, has a “strong command of banking law”. He recently advised Goldman Sachs in its conversion to a bank holding company and AIG in its $85 billion emergency financing plan with the Federal Reserve. Mark Welshimer, the deputy managing partner of the financial institutions group and the coordinator of the structured finance group, has earned the “gratitude” and “respect” of some of the country’s largest financial institutions for his bank regulatory advice and representation in capital-raising transactions. Mitchell Eitel is highly regarded by his peers and clients alike, and is “one of the very best” lawyers in regards to financial services M&A, private equity investments and bank enforcement and regulatory matters. Michael Escue has for some years been considered a leader in the field of banking regulation and compliance. He is considered “invaluable” to both domestic and foreign financial institutions in need of advice on American banking laws and regulations.
In the field of capital markets the firm has a global reach. In New York, Robert Buckholz Jr is a “treasured” capital markets lawyer and has been a leader in the area for over a decade. His extensive experience comprises of handling public and private debt and equity financings for domestic and international underwriters and issuers. Waldo Jones Jr heads up the firm’s Sydney office and is considered “extremely knowledgeable” by international and Australian investment banks and their affiliates who he advises on US capital market activities. The London office is led by Richard Morrissey, who has worked with a number of private equity firms on buying transactions; he has also worked corporate clients selling businesses to a variety of private equity firms.
