PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
One of the firm’s strongest practices is mining. With several large cases ongoing involving the purchase or expansion of mining projects, the 20-strong team has seen a heavy workload of late. One such case involves two separate teams within the group advising both sides of a deal based in China. Head partner of the firm Luis Carlos Rodrigo Prado is a “world-class mining expert” with a focus on advising clients on corporate and tax law issues within the field. Oscar Benavides specialises in the structuring, negotiation and enforcement of all types of contracts for exploring, developing and making use of natural resources. He also has experience working with mining clients on M&A deals.
The M&A practice at Rodrigo Elías & Medrano Abogados is seen as a “market leader” by many in Peru. The practice consists of over 35 lawyers, 17 of whom are partners. Luis Enrique Palacios is a “technical genius” who has broad experience with clients in the energy, telecommunications and mining industries. Last year he was involved in a case in which Colombian Grupo Sura and Canada’s Scotiabank purchased BBVA’s Peruvian pension fund business for US$515 million, which included a corporate spin-off and merger. Also involved on this deal was Jean Paul Chabaneix who is recognised for his work in an impressive total of five practice areas. As well as his “stellar” work in the M&A sector, Chabaneix is also recognised for his expertise in banking, corporate governance, energy and project finance, proving him to be a “true all-rounder”.
Aviation is another key area for the firm and the practice focuses on the purchase, financing, and leasing of aircraft, as well as on aviation insurance policies and claims arising from air transportation accidents. Fernando Hurtado de Mendoza is a “rising star” of aviation finance who is already a “go-to” lawyer for many. The “wonderful” Jorge Velarde is recognised by us for both his work in contentious aviation cases and his insurance and reinsurance practice, which peers describe as “top-notch”.
The firm also comes highly recommended for its corporate tax practice, this year its lawyers were involved in advising companies involved in multimillion-dollar mergers and transactions on their tax liabilities and strategies. Alex Córdova is commended for his “impressive” tax planning practice and “approachable nature”, while Humberto Medrano is recognised for his “efficient and client focused” tax negotiation work.
The firm prides itself on its commitment to helping individuals and organisations that lack the financial resources to afford the legal aspects of their initiatives and projects. Some of their key work is with Acción Emprendedora, an organisation that provides business training to micro-entrepreneurs in the shanty towns of Lima. The firm provides the organisation and its beneficiaries with free legal advice. They also provide pro bono assistance to a number of cultural and local entities, and for more the 20 years have give five complete scholarships per year to talented law students at the Universidad Católica Law School. In December 2013 they were recognised by the university as the most significant provider of help to its students.
As the firm looks to the future it remains dedicated to continuing to provide a quality service at reasonable prices. It also aims to maintain its independent firm focus in Peru, while fostering strong relationships with firms across the world. In 2014, Rodrigo Elías & Medrano Abogados plans to strengthen its oil and gas, aviation, insurance and international arbitration practices to meet steadily growing client demands. It will also aim to increase its international outlook with a greater focus on Asian and Pacific Rim countries and firms.
