PEOPLE AND PRACTICES

The labour and employment department has more than 160 lawyers across the US, London, Paris and Beijing. Key clients include Paramount Pictures Corporation and Whole Foods Market and the team covers the full range of employment law matters. In New Orleans, Howard Shapiro is a “renowned” ERISA litigator and focuses on defending matters raising sophisticated pre-emption issues. Bettina Plevan co-heads the international labour and employment group and class/collective action group from the New York office. Her “leading” practice handles litigation and counselling clients in employment matters with clients ranging from diverse industries such as banking, health care, publishing and entertainment. She is joined by the “top-notch” Kathleen McKenna, whose experience includes defending employers in discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful discharge and breach of contract cases. Paul Salvatore is a “first-class” practitioner who negotiates major collective bargaining agreements. His recent experience includes representing The Related Group in the negotiation of a landmark project labour agreement on Manhattan’s West Side. In Paris, Yasmine Tarasewicz has a “terrific” practice centred on collective issues with an emphasis on major reorganisations.

Last year’s Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst annual survey named Proskauer as the most active law firm by number of funds closed on behalf of sponsors. The private investment funds group plays an important role representing both sponsors and institutional investors in structuring and alternative investment programmes. In New York, Christopher Wells heads the hedge funds group and organises onshore and offshore funds using a range of investment and trading strategies. He is praised for his “strategic vision” and “impressive expertise”. In Boston, global co-head of the private investment funds group Robin Painter is a “top-tier” practitioner. Over the last couple of years she has been managing teams in fund structuring projects with capital commitments of over $10 billion. Fellow co-head David Tegeler has a “strong” practice involving fund formations, buy and sell side secondary transactions and direct secondary transactions. Nigel van Zyl has a “very well-regarded” practice in the London office. He represents general partners in the formation, raising, maintenance and ongoing operation and compliance of funds.

The sports law group has been active for 50 years and provides services to major sports leagues, teams, owners and affiliates. The team encompasses lawyers with wide-ranging expertise from litigation to tax thus ensuring that all matters are catered for. Jon Oram is a “brilliant” practitioner with a broad-based transactional practice. He has represented clients such as the National Basketball Association and the ATP Tour in a number of significant transactional matters.

Lawyers in the real estate practice regularly handle transactions relating to all sectors of the real estate business including financing, leasing, contract and tax issues. Louis Eatman is a “big name” in the field. His practice encompasses a wide range of matters including joint ventures, acquisitions, sales and foreclosure issues.

PRO BONO

Proskauer Rose stands by its motto of “doing well, by doing good”. More than 75 per cent of associates participate in the pro bono programme and dedicate thousands of hours to helping community groups, refugees and those in need. The initiative committee spends its time forming lasting partnerships with public service organisations around the world to help expand its reach and impact. Its accomplishments were rewarded last year with the New York State Bar Association awarding Proskauer the President’s pro bono service award for the first judicial district.

DIVERSITY

The firm’s steering committee and affinity groups ensure that sufficient attention and time is paid to addressing the issues of equal opportunity and diversity. Proskauer is also actively engaged in a number of pipeline initiatives such as the Cristo Rey New York corporate work study programme, which offers internships to students attending Cristo Rey high school where the majority of students live in the South Bronx, Washington Heights and Harlem.

LOOKING FORWARD

Proskauer has confirmed its desire to “strategically enhance its capital markets, private investment funds and business solutions, governance, restructuring and bankruptcy capabilities in the US, Europe and Asia”.
