The firm fields a particularly strong real estate team, with eight inclusions in the chapter. Practice leader of the real estate group Jim Hilton impresses clients and peers with the “commercially sound” nature of his advice. Gayle Hunter focuses on commercial transactions and is “practical and efficient” in handling complex matters for developers, investors and fund managers. With over 30 years’ experience, Richard Dawson has acted on commercial and residential projects for a wide range of industries. Thomas von Hahn and Garth Anderson both focus their expertise on the energy sector, the latter praised for his “innovative and thoughtful” approach to acquisition, development and financing issues.

Energy and natural resources are important areas for Blakes, with lawyers featured in our oil and gas, mining and environment chapters. Charles Kazaz is “extremely visible in the market” for both mining and environment work and London managing partner David Glennie is skilled in natural resource transactions, particularly oil and gas. Focusing on oil and gas, Beijing-based Robert Kwauk has “extensive experience” advising international companies on transactions and financings in China. Ben Rogers conducts a “stellar” practice advising energy companies on a diverse range of issues. Alongside him, energy regulatory “doyen” Kemm Yates QC represents various consumer and producer interests in Canada and further afield, while Tim Martin specialises in international energy projects and disputes, also achieving a listing in our arbitration chapter.

Judy Wilson is this year’s most highly nominated public procurement lawyer, with over 20 years’ experience in public and private sector procurement. She has advised on government and private sector negotiations and is “absolutely first-rate”. Colleague Jeff Merrick offers “top-notch” advice on public procurement projects including hospitals, hotels and shopping centres and also features in our real estate chapter. Vancouver-based Anne Stewart QC is “a respected presence” in the public procurement and project finance markets, and Gordon Cameron’s experience in public procurement litigation sees him lauded a “star”.

Blakes also leads the way in finance and transactional work – the firm excels across our capital markets, banking, corporate tax and M&A chapters. Pat Finnerty handles a full range of debt and equity capital markets transactions, both domestic and cross-border. Banking and corporate finance expert Michael McIntosh “always gives excellent advice” and has acted as lead counsel in several high profile financing matters. John Teolis focuses on assisting entities to establish a banking presence in Canada, including Wal-Mart and Barclays. On the corporate tax side, Kathleen Penny is “incredibly well informed” on domestic and cross-border corporate tax liabilities. The firm’s tax practice group leader Jeffrey Trossman is “sought after” for tax planning for mergers, investments and reorganisations. With listings in our corporate governance and M&A chapters, Brock Gibson QC is an “undisputed leader in the field”, having advised on many of the largest transactions in Canada for financial institutions, energy companies and technology giants.

The Toronto office fields an impressive number of competition experts. Brian Facey and Calvin S Goldman QC co-head the competition practice and are “strongly recommended” for their broad competition and antitrust expertise. Julie Soloway focuses on M&A and has advised numerous multinational companies on the relevant competition regulations. Her “technical knowledge and commercial awareness” earns her a high place in our research. Randall Hofley advises on all types of competition regulations and is particularly renowned for his experience in the financial services, transportation and communications sector.

In other areas, Sheldon Burshtein is an intellectual property “wizard”, with multiple recommendations in our patents, trademarks and internet, e-commerce and data protection chapters. “Leading light” Donald Gray has “substantial experience” in the aviation sector, and is highly rated for his aircraft financing expertise.

The quality of Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP’s multidisciplinary practice sees it nominated across several more chapters, including management labour and employment, regulatory communications and life sciences.
