Firm of the Year – Corporate Immigration
Fragomen Del Rey Bernsen & Loewy LLP is the world’s leading corporate immigration law firm and one of only a handful of firms in this survey to earn international recognition based on its accomplishments in a single legal discipline. Operating out of a total of 39 offices in 15 jurisdictions across the Americas, Europe, Asia, African and the Middle East, the firm is hailed by respondents to our survey as an “unbeatable global force” in immigration law. Fragomen further bolstered its global standing in April when it hired approximately 80 professionals from Berry Appleman & Leiden LLP, including 16 new partners, and boosting the firm’s total number of featured lawyers in our research to 25. Twenty four of these listings appear in the corporate immigration chapter, giving Fragomen by far the most comprehensive coverage of any immigration firm or department in our research.

New York is home to more of the firm’s recognised lawyers than any other office, with name partner Austin Fragomen Jr ranking as “pre-eminent”. A former counsel to the US House of Representatives subcommittee on immigration, citizenship and international law, Fragomen has also testified before the US Congress on immigration issues as well as numerous House and Senate subcommittees on business immigration topics and is praised as a “shining example to the industry” by peers.
Rodney Malpert is co-managing partner of the Phoenix office and specialises in the immigration implications of corporate reorganisations, pre-hire processes and discrimination, consular practices and security advisory opinions, and non-immigrant statuses. A former senior counsel at Texas Instruments, where he managed global immigration, Malpert brings “invaluable corporate expertise” to the table in his private practice work. At the same office, Bonnie Gibson is an immigration compliance expert with a “strong pedigree” in labour and employment law who peers praise for her work in corporate transactions and customs enforcement proceedings.
Two lawyers from separate offices represent the firm in California. Santa Clara-based Cynthia Lange leads the high-tech practice and acts as managing partner to the firm’s Northern California contingent, and she receives praise from sources for her “world-class” knowledge of government investigations, audits and compliance programmes as well as I-9 employment eligibility advice. Co-managing partner of the Irvine office, David Hirson is a “very highly regarded” name who counts numerous Fortune 500 companies among his clients. Further listings form offices in the Midwest and on the East Coast add to Fragomen’s US profile.
New hire Daryl Buffenstein enjoys a “first-class” international reputation and has been a major contributor to immigration legislation in the United States over the course of his career. Buffenstein is listed in both the corporate immigration and management labour and employment chapters, and is joined in the former section by fellow Atlanta-based “experts” Deborah Marlowe and Kyle Sherman.
The firm fields three lawyers from as many offices in the Asia-Pacific region, among whom Shanghai’s Becky Xia is a “noteworthy inclusion” according to peers. Responsible for the firm’s China practice, Xia specialises in work for multinationals and financial institutions in obtaining investor visas and employment-based immigration and compliance. In Singapore, Mark Buchanan is a “valued expert” in counselling clients on the immigration aspects of corporate transactions and restructurings, while Sydney’s Robert Walsh enjoys a “great reputation” for his work on behalf of private companies and government entities in matters relating to compliance, overseas employment and visa categories.
Caron Pope represents the London office, where she is a “leading light” in a “first-rate” team providing advice on UK immigration and nationality law. Alex Paterson scores highly in the Perth office, and additional listings in San José and Johannesburg further attest to the international diversity and comprehensive coverage of the firm in this discipline.
