PEOPLE AND PRACTICES

The white-collar crime defence practice is “second to none” and the firm has been involved in numerous investigations and litigation relating to insider trading, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act enforcement and health-care fraud. Seven lawyers from the New York office have been singled out for their “superb” work in the business crime defence field. Elkan Abramowitz is an “exceptional” lawyer with a wealth of experience in handling civil and criminal matters. The “brilliant” Paul Grand is another leading lawyer; his recent experience includes defending the former Chief Financial Officer of Adelphia Communications Corporation in US v Rigas, et al. Lawrence Iason represents financial institutions, major corporations and prominent individuals in high-profile cases. He also served as a member of the New York State White-Collar Crime Task Force from October 2012 to October 2013, thus cementing his “solid reputation” as a leader in the field.

Robert Anello’s practice involves representing defendants in cases alleging business crimes, regulatory and tax violations and civil frauds. With experience in pretrial representation, internal investigations and representations before ethics and licensing boards along with his trial work, Anello is praised for his “wide-ranging capabilities”. Richard Weinberg is “renowned” for his expertise representing both individuals and corporations in investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and US Department of Justice as well as other state regulatory agencies.

Jodi Misher Peikin has an “impressive” white-collar criminal defence and regulatory enforcement practice. Among other representative experience, she has defended a former CEO charged with securities fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud and obstruction of justice, for which the charges were eventually dropped. Jonathan Sack’s litigation skills are “extremely highly rated”. He is an expert in litigating complex civil and criminal cases and conducting internal investigations.

PRO BONO

As specialist trial lawyers, the team are well placed to assist litigants in both criminal and civil cases. The firm has assisted charities such as Amnesty International in a civil liberties appeal, helping to write the lead amicus curiae brief. Over the years, lawyers have dedicated hundreds of hours to assisting and defending those most in need. Their commitment was recognised by the Legal Aid Society in 2013, as one of the recipients of the 2013 Pro Bono Publico Award.

LOOKING FORWARD

With a consistently active trial docket, Morvillo Abramowitz looks set to continue working on high-profile and complex cases in the coming year. The team’s substantial trial experience ensures that clients can remain confident that they “will receive the best possible representation”.
