PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
The firm’s corporate practice is home to more than 250 lawyers representing clients such as Goldman Sachs, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Fontainebleau and Oak Hill Capital Partners. Robert B Schumer in New York is chair of the corporate department and co-head of the firm’s merger and acquisitions group. He is particularly recommended for his work in the area of contested matters, including unsolicited offers and proxy contests. He was recently part of a team advising William Morris Endeavor Entertainment on its proposed acquisition of sports and media talent agency IMG Worldwide. Co-head of the firm’s global mergers and acquisitions group Toby S Myerson is a “star” in the field. His practice has seen him represent corporations, financial institutions and investment banks in transactions including representing Citigroup in its acquisition of Nikko Cordial for $14 billion in cash and stock and sale of three Nikko businesses for $10.8 billion in cash. He is also a “leading authority” on corporate governance issues. Wilmington-based Stephen P Lamb is “highly knowledgeable” on Delaware corporate law and governance issues arising in transactional and litigation contexts. David K Lakhdhir is located in the firm’s London office and advises European and Asian clients on the acquisition of US companies, as well as advising US financial institutions and private equity investors in European and Asian transactions. Xiaoyu Greg Liu in Beijing focuses on cross-border M&A transactions in greater China. His notable transactions include working on the establishment of the Shanghai Disneyland joint venture between Disney and Shanghai Shendi Group. Hong Kong-based Jeanette Chan concentrates her practice on joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions and private equity investments. She is particularly active in the Chinese telecoms, IT and media markets and is noted for her “impressive knowledge of the industry”.
Paul Weiss’ litigation practice is “sensational” and covers a broad range of areas from white-collar crime and regulatory defence to securities litigation and product liability defence. Chair of the firm Brad Karp maintains a “very active” practice focusing on commercial litigation and business crime defence. His significant matters include representing Bank of America in litigious and regulatory matters arising out of its 2008 merger with Merrill Lynch. Theodore V Wells Jr is co-chair of the litigation department and has a broad practice including white-collar criminal defence, civil and corporate litigation, SEC regulatory work, health-care fraud, investigations, environmental matters and class actions. Peers describe him as a “great strategist”. Mark F Pomerantz is a “formidable trial lawyer” with experience in investigations undertaken by the US DoJ and state and local prosecutors. He has handled matters involving alleged corporate misconduct, securities and bank fraud, mail and wire fraud, FCPA violations, tax offences and bribery. Chair of the FCPA group Mark F Mendelsohn is “in high demand” due to his prior experience serving as deputy chief of the fraud section of the criminal division of the DoJ. Beth A Wilkinson specialises in white collar crime defence, internal investigations, product liability and complex civil litigation. She was recently appointed by the Federal Trade Commission to lead its investigation of Google. Moses Silverman’s skills lie in antitrust, securities, corporate and commercial litigation. He is also active in arbitration.
Recent activity in the firm’s pro bono practice includes filing an amicus brief on behalf of the National Women’s Law Center and 68 other organisations in the Supreme Court of the US in support of the contraception regulations in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Paul Weiss represents individuals in need of legal representation across constitutional, civil and human interest areas and also partners with many public interest organisations including Advocates for Children, Immigration Equality and the Legal Aid Society.
Paul Weiss has a long-standing history of promoting diversity within the legal profession notable by the fact that in 1949, when no other law firm would hire an African-American despite his qualification, it hired William Coleman Jr, editor of the Harvard Law Review and former Supreme Court clerk.
