The firm’s global profile was underlined by the launch of its fourth firmwide, and first global, pro bono initiative: the Africa and Asia Agricultural Enterprise Project. This project runs alongside the firm’s other pro bono activities, and involves teams of lawyers from all the firm’s offices around the world providing IP, financing, trade and regulatory advice to clients in developing countries who produce agricultural goods enabling them to get those products to market and to receive a fair return on their investment.
This initiative harnesses Sidley’s “unrivalled” trade and customs practice, which has been recognised as the world’s finest nine times in the Who’s Who Legal awards. Eleven lawyers are selected, including six from the DC office (which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2013). Andrew W Shoyer chairs the firm’s international trade and dispute resolution practice and is a “superlative lawyer”. The firm is also very strong in Switzerland, with four lawyers selected in Geneva. Scott D Andersen is co-manager of the office and was described to researchers as a “guru”, while Todd J Friedbacher opened the office in 2000 and is well known across Europe and beyond. Arnoud Willems is selected from Brussels and completes the firm’s market leading presence in this practice area.
Sidley’s largest contingent is in the life sciences section, and the firm’s lawyers are listed 20 times in the following pages. The regulatory practice is particularly strong, with 10 lawyers selected including Scott Bass, one of the most highly regarded experts in this field worldwide and head of the firm’s global life sciences team. Coleen Klasmeier is global coordinator of the firm’s food, drug and medical device regulatory practice and rated as “tremendously knowledgeable about all aspects of regulation in this sector”. The “excellent” Raymond A Bonner heads the food, drug and medical device compliance and enforcement practice while Maurits JF Lugard heads the EU life sciences regulatory team and leads a quartet of nominees from Brussels. The firm’s IP strength is particularly visible in this sector, and several nominees combine listings in the life sciences chapter with recognition for their patent work overall. Thomas H Beck has represented clients such as Eli Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline and leads the New York IP group, and chair of the national IP practice David T Pritikin also achieves dual recognition, in particular for his trial work. Sidley is internationally renowned for its product liability expertise, evident both in this sector and in an eight strong contingent in the corresponding chapter. Sara J Gourley in Chicago is “one of the leading experts in this field worldwide” and Michael W Davis is nationally recognised for his work in relation to pharmaceutical, food products and chemical litigation. Debra E Pole in Los Angeles is an “outstanding litigator” who was commended for her role as national co-ordinating counsel for defendants in high profile silicone breast implant litigation as well as diet drug litigation. Co-head of the global technology transactions practice Jeffrey Rothstein is very well known on the transactional side, and Chen Yang is feted in the Beijing office.
The 11 listed lawyers in the private funds chapter reflects the firm’s strength in the sector. Michael J Schmidtberger is managing partner of the New York office and global co-head of the investment funds, advisers and derivatives group. The owner of an “international reputation”, he is joined by Susan Lewis who was described as “pretty darned good” in relation to private investment fund structures. David Sawyier in Chicago is “absolutely first rate” and Bruce Gardner is “one of the foremost experts in London”.
A similar number of lawyers are recognised in the capital markets research. Renwick D Martin in the New York office is an acknowledged leader in the field, while Cathy M Kaplan co-heads the New York global finance practice and is revered in the market for her securitisation work. Sidley’s strength in Asia is demonstrated by the selection of two lawyers apiece from the Hong Kong and Singapore offices; Prabhat K Mehta in particular is recognised for a track record that includes representing Government of Singapore Investment Corporation in its $6.9 billion investment in preferred stock of Citigroup. John D Woodhall is co-head of the global finance practice in London and a “top-drawer” securitisation and structured finance expert.
David T Buente Jr leads an environmental group that sees 10 of its members recognised by our research, and he is rated as one of the leading figures in the practice area worldwide. Formerly chief of the environmental enforcement section of the US Department of Justice, he was highly commended by interviewees who stated, “It is difficult to think of anybody better.” Roger R Martella Jr recently served as the general counsel of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and his “knowledge and know-how are unrivalled”, while Angus Macbeth also scored very highly at home and abroad. Robert M Olian co-heads the practice nationally, as well as leading the Chicago group, and he also scores highly. The “extremely impressive” Kristina Nordlander is rated as pre-eminent in Brussels, and her regulatory expertise also sees her listed among the leading competition practitioners.
Our insurance and reinsurance research identifies eight Sidley lawyers as leaders in the field, with five based in Chicago. Michael P Goldman co-chairs the insurance and financial services group and was described as a “leading light”, while his fellow co-chair Susan Stone is renowned as a “fantastic” litigator and has worked for clients including Aon and Liberty Mutual. Michael J Pinsel was commended as “very professional, experienced and efficient”. Jeff S Liebmann stands out in New York, and in London Dorothy Cory-Wright is very well regarded for her dispute resolution work in this sector and was praised as “highly responsive” to clients. Nigel Montgomery was said to be “unrivalled” and specialises in insurance transactions.
The banking chapter features six “superb” practitioners, all based in Chicago. Gary B Stern is much sought after in relation to the financing of intellectual property royalties and revenue streams, while Zulfiqar Bokhari is rated as “tremendous” and coordinates the firm’s client relationships with leading commercial and investment banks in the syndicated loan market. H Bruce Bernstein is a senior counsel and revered in the local market.
Co-chairman of executive committee Thomas A Cole is strongly recommended in the M&A chapter, and he is joined by five further colleagues including Paul L Choi, whose track record includes advising First Data Corporation on its $29 billion acquisition by an investor group controlled by KKR. Cole’s fellow co-chair Carter G Phillips and the firm’s appellate group earned national recognition by winning three cases before the US Supreme Court in the course of a week. A “giant in the field”, Phillips successfully argued on behalf of Fox and Southern Union before the Court and his 76 arguments in total before that Court are the most of any lawyer in current private practice. The firm’s arbitration practice is also strong, with Stanimir Alexandrov “consistently impressive” and David Roney in Geneva part of a “fantastic team”. Senior counsel Thomas C Green is rated as “one of the toughest white-collar practitioners in the country” by his peers, and he leads four highly rated individuals in the business crime defence chapter.
Stephen Kinsella OBE heads the European antitrust group and is a “truly exceptional lawyer”. One of the most highly rated competition practitioners in the field worldwide, he is joined by three further nominees in the corresponding chapter.
Taken together, the breadth and depth of the firm’s expertise establishes it as the leading firm in the US, and one of the outstanding firms in the legal market worldwide.
