Morrison & Foerster’s real estate practice is “hugely respected” in the legal marketplace. Our research identifies six leading individuals at the firm across its offices in the US and Asia. In Los Angeles, Thomas Fileti heads the office’s real estate practice group and specialises in real estate finance transactions and credit facilities. Sources describe him as “sensational”. Palo Alto-based Philip Levine is experienced in all major property types, including multi-family projects, office buildings, industrial projects and ground-up development projects. In New York, Mark Edelstein is chair of the firm’s real estate finance and distressed real estate practices and is “highly sought after” by clients. His practice covers syndicated and participated loan arrangements, mezzanine financing and inter-creditor and co-lender agreements. In Shanghai, Gregory Tan receives numerous recommendations for his knowledge of the Chinese real estate market while managing partner of the Beijing office Paul McKenzie focuses on real estate development projects and is also recommended for his knowledge of the mining sector. Tokyo-based Keisuke Mochizuki specialises in real estate transactions and finance and is praised for his “solutions-oriented” approach.

The competition chapter also features six lawyers from the firm. The Washington, DC, office fields three lawyers including co-chairs of the global antitrust law practice group David Meyer and Stephen Smith. Meyer advises clients from a range of industries on merger control, government investigations, litigation and strategic counselling. Smith is a “pre-eminent” litigator and represents parties before the antitrust division of the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. In Brussels, Rony P Gerrits is also a co-chair of the global practice and managing partner of the Brussels office. His practice emphasises global cartel cases and he has represented clients in investigations into cathode ray tubes, smart card chips, auto parts and LCDs. In Tokyo, Kei Amemiya is “extremely knowledgeable” in Japanese competition law having previously served as an investigator at the Fair Trade Commission in Japan.

Five practitioners are selected for inclusion in our internet, e-commerce and data protection chapter. In DC, L Richard Fischer is a “distinguished practitioner” specialising in privacy, data security, e-commerce, technology and financial services joint ventures. In New York, Miriam Wugmeister chairs the firm’s global privacy and data security group and is considered a “true expert” on data protection. In San Francisco, William Schwartz advises on transactional and counselling matters relating to computers, communications equipment, semiconductors, the internet and e-commerce.

Morrison & Foerster’s environment practice is “internationally renowned”. The firm recently saved San Francisco’s historic Sharp Park golf course from closure after environmental groups attempted to close it by bringing a federal Endangered Species Act lawsuit. Four practitioners are singled out for their “strategic counselling” and “in-depth knowledge” of laws and regulations, three of whom are based in the firm’s San Francisco office. Michèle Corash is “universally recognised as a leader in the field”. Her clients include companies in the electronics, consumer products, food and beverage, land development, construction, petrochemical, and defence industries. Peter Hsiao heads the environment and energy group in Los Angeles, as well as the products and chemicals team and is known for his “strong analytical skills”.

Four listings in the life sciences chapter demonstrate the firm’s strong position within the industry. Gladys Monroy appears in both the intellectual property and regulatory sections for her “first rate” work in the field. She represents clients such as Chiron, Targeted Genetics and Arana Therapeutics. Alongside her, Kate Murashige and Rachel Krevans are listed in the life sciences: IP section for their “superior knowledge” in the sector.

Banking and finance also emerges as an area of strength for the firm; four practitioners are listed in the project finance chapter and a further two in banking. In Tokyo, Dale Caldwell is listed in both the project finance and public procurement chapters for his broad expertise in projects. His significant representations include advising SCM Minera Lumina Copper Chile in connection with the $1.4 billion limited recourse project financing for the development of the Caserones copper and molybdenum mining project in Chile. In DC, Frederick Jenney focuses on international project finance representing lenders and developers in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the US. He is especially active in the power, energy, hotel and manufacturing industries. New York-based Barbara Mendelson is a “terrific” banking lawyer with an “in-depth knowledge” of regulations.
