On 1 July 2013 Ballard Spahr announced a partnership with white collar crime defence boutique Stillman & Friedman in New York. The partnership marks the firm’s 14th office and strengthens the firm’s white-collar defence and securities litigation and enforcement offering.

The news comes on the back of the hire of five litigators in Denver in June 2013 as well as the opening of its San Diego office in 2010 with the addition of a team of white-collar and commercial litigators from La Bella & McNamara.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
Ballard Spahr has a highly impressive national real estate practice which offers clients a broad range of services including acquisitions, leasing, dispute resolution and financing. Lawyers at the firm recently obtained approvals for a $150 million museum in Philadelphia dedicated to the American Revolution. Roger Winston leads the firm’s mixed-use development and condominiums team and is managing partner of the Bethesda office. He represents developers, investors and lenders and is “very capable”. Denver-based Beverly Quail focuses her practice on real estate financing and development and has a “wealth of experience” in defaulted real estate. Gary York is located in the firm’s Los Angeles office and he is particularly knowledgeable on real estate finance. Raymond Truitt in Baltimore focuses on commercial real estate financing, leasing, development and restructuring.
The firm’s environment practice fields climate change and sustainability initiative practice leader Robert McKinstry Jr, who has a broad environmental practice. Brendan Collins is also singled out for his environmental work for clients in the electric power sector and oil and gas industry.
The newly created partnership Ballard Spahr Stillman & Friedman in New York is home to two “superb” business crime defence lawyers: Charles Stillman and Marjorie Peerce. Stillman is a litigator with over 40 years’ experience and is “unrivalled” in relation to his experience in white-collar crime defence and other regulatory and enforcement matters. Peerce represents individuals and institutions in criminal and regulatory investigations. She has experience in mail fraud, bribery, accounting fraud, government contract procurement, government subsidy fraud, computer fraud, health-care fraud and criminal customs investigations among others.
Ballard Spahr offers billable hour credit for pro bono work and strongly encourages its lawyers to engage in its programme. The firm has made an annual commitment to donate at least three per cent of its billable hours to pro bono activities which is equal to about 30,000 hours. Activities range from non-profit support, asylum and immigration cases to child advocacy and death penalty matters.
