In July 2013, Morgan Lewis announced plans to open an office in Dubai providing services in energy, infrastructure, capital markets and M&A. The office will work closely with the full-service London team as well as the rest of the international network to provide clients with access to the full range of expertise on offer.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
Morgan Lewis boasts an experienced energy practice with specialists in electric, nuclear, oil and natural gas, renewable energy and water. Lawyers provide practical guidance on corporate, finance, transactional, regulatory and litigation matters for major domestic and international entities. In Houston, leader of the energy transactions practice David Asmus is a “top-tier” practitioner. His practice focuses on oil and gas development projects, acquisitions and divestitures and energy-based financings. Brian Bradshaw has a “wealth of experience” involving energy and infrastructure transactions. Jonathan Hines in Moscow is an “extremely talented” lawyer. He represents private and state-owned companies on matters involving large-scale oil and gas and mining development projects in the CIS region. Aset Shyngyssov is managing partner of the Almaty office and focuses on energy finance matters in Kazakhstan and throughout central Asia.
The labour and employment practice has helped clients for more than 50 years, assisting in devising solutions for issues including counselling, benefits litigation and collective bargaining. Mark Dichter is based in Philadelphia and chairs the labour and employment practice. He is a “dean” of the profession and represents and counsels major multinational employers in the full spectrum of employment law issues. In DC, Charles Cohen is an “outstanding” senior counsel. His practice focuses on representing senior management in complex matters in the private sector. Grace Speights chairs the systemic employment litigation practice and defends clients in connection with discrimination claims. She is a class action “expert” and an “excellent” litigator. Harry Rissetto is a “seasoned” practitioner and has particular expertise in the airline, railroad and trucking industries.
The life sciences practice group encompasses over 200 lawyers, scientists and other technical specialists. The team counts a number of the most successful pharmaceutical companies in the world among its clients. The wide-ranging practice covers all aspects of the life sciences product cycle. Kathleen Sanzo heads the firm’s FDA practice and is “sensational” on regulatory matters. On the transactional side, Randall Sunberg has been involved in numerous big-dollar transactions, including the representation of Eli Lilly in its negotiation of a co-development and co-commercialisation agreement with Pfizer. Jeffry Mann in San Francisco heads the office’s IP practice and is a “talented patent litigator”.
Morgan Lewis’s private equity team works on the buy and sell side, advising on multibillion-dollar acquisitions and related financings, as well as small and middle market deals. Louis Singer heads the private investment funds practice. He “excels” in his private funds practice and represents domestic and international clients in regard to virtually every type of private investment fund. Georgette Schaefer advises clients on private equity, venture and hedge funds among others and is “greatly admired” for her knowledge of investment programmes.
In 2013 Morgan Lewis was presented with the exceptional service award for outstanding pro bono representation to prisoners on death row by the ABA Death Penalty Representation Project. As a signatory of the Pro Bono Institute’s law firm pro bono challenge, Morgan Lewis aims to spend at least three per cent of its total billable hours on pro bono matters and in 2013 it devoted 71,000 hours on pro bono representations, at a value of tens of millions of dollars.
Ara Tucker is Morgan Lewis’ director of diversity and supervises the execution of the firm’s diversity initiatives. As part of the annual Upward Review programme, partners are measured on their individual commitment to enhancing diversity. The firm also hosts an Attorney of Colour meeting which brings lawyers together to discuss diversity relating to the both the needs of the firm and its clients.
The early part of 2014 saw Morgan Lewis announce the arrival of three renewable energy lawyers in the Chicago, New York and San Francisco offices.
