The firm has an overwhelming presence in capital markets, with ten inclusions in this chapter. The New York office fields a particularly strong team. Nicholas Adams Kronfeld is regarded as “outstanding” and recently advised Santander Mexico on its dual stock exchange listing. Alongside him are global co-heads of the capital markets group, Michael Kaplan, noted for the “practical and commercial” advice he offers to issuers and underwriters in capital markets transactions, and Richard D Truesdell Jr, praised for his “innovative” approach. Managing partner of the firm Thomas J Reid impresses clients with his commercial expertise, having previously directed the investment banking division of Morgan Stanley. In London, three outstanding capital markets lawyers are selected, including the “absolutely first-class” Simon Witty, who has acted for a huge range of high-profile corporate clients. Colleagues Paul Etienne Kumleben and Jeffrey M Oakes are also rated “exceptional”, the latter having advised clients extensively in his capacity as head of the firm’s European financial institutions group. Eugene C Gregor acts as a US capital markets expert in Asia, operating out of the Tokyo and Hong Kong offices, and Theodore A Paradise is able to use his expertise in both the US and Japanese legal markets to assist high-profile clients with cross-border transactions.

The strength of Davis Polk’s finance practice is demonstrated by a further fourteen inclusions across our corporate tax and banking chapters. Among the banking experts is the “fantastic” John L. Douglas, head of the banking regulatory practice, whom clients rate as “extremely well informed”. Head of the financial institutions group Randall D Guynn is “an invaluable source of advice”, having worked with major US banks as well as the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. Also part of the “formidable” banking team in New York are Bradley Y Smith, a “recognised leader of the global finance bar”, and James A Florack, who co-heads the global credit group. He is recognised for his “practical and effective approach” to cross border banking issues and transactions for major players including Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley.

On the corporate tax side, several outstanding attorneys from the firm’s New York office are highlighted including head of the tax department Avishai Shachar, a “highly respected” practitioner. Shachar has advised on a variety of transactions for prestigious companies including PepsiCo, Comcast and Citigroup. He is joined by the “excellent” Harry Ballan and “highly proficient” Samuel Dimon. Kathleen L Ferrell and Lucy W Farr are also “talented attorneys”, the latter focusing on international tax planning for leading financial institutions. In London, Jonathan Cooklin has advised major UK and international groups on cross-border corporate transactions. John D Paton focuses on the US tax aspects of securities and international financial products, and is regarded as “a very important market presence”.

Davis Polk’s competition team makes a strong showing in our research, with six inclusions in this chapter. Christopher B Hockett has “extensive experience” in representing companies in antitrust disputes and has litigated for technology giants including Hewlett-Packard and T-Mobile. In DC, Michael N Sohn is nominated for his expertise in the antitrust implications of mergers and acquisitions – clients praise his “innovative and skilful” approach. Arthur F Golden is a “senior statesman” of antitrust law, having handled major transactions for Emerson Electric over the last 30 years. Colleague Ronan P Harty is noted for his focus on the antitrust aspects of cross-border transactions, joint ventures and investigations. On the M&A side, George R Bason Jr is global co-head of the M&A practice and is “renowned” for his representation of major financial institutions as well as consumer brands. He is also recommended in our corporate governance chapter. William F Barron is lauded for his work across Asia; now based in Hong Kong, he is “universally experienced” and “really knows what he is talking about” on all types of transactions.

Davis Polk cements its position as a global leader with inclusions in a further six chapters, including commercial litigation, business crime defence and insolvency.
