Most recently the firm engaged the services of former Maddocks partner David Rennick as a consultant to assist in evaluating the opportunities in the Australian market and to make recommendations to the firm’s partnership.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
Pinsent Masons is our construction law firm of the year in recognition of its “unrivalled” depth of expertise in this area. The firm garners more listings in our research than any other firm. John Bishop is head of the Beijing office and specialises in construction and engineering law. He is an arbitrator, adjudicator and mediator and his “reputation spans the globe”. Mohan Pillay is the joint head of the Singapore office. His disputes practice focuses on construction and engineering projects and he has appeared as lead counsel before the High Court and Court of Appeal in Singapore. Martin Harman has almost 40 years’ experience advising contractors, owners and consultants on major infrastructure projects. His recent experience includes advising on airports, motorways, sports stadia and high-rise buildings in the Middle East, India and the Far East. Michelle Nelson is known for her “careful handling” of disputes in the construction sector. Fraser McMillan is head of the Glasgow office and is noted for his “solutions-oriented” approach to matters arising in construction and engineering projects. Vincent Connor is head of office in Hong Kong and head of sectors – Asia. His practice includes strategic advice during projects and representation of clients in arbitration and litigation. In addition, he has experience of adjudication under security of payment legislation.
Clive Seddon heads the firm’s TMT team and is “world class” according to sources. He advises on transformational change projects, disputes and renegotiation of contracts. The firm recently enhanced its TMT practice with the acquisition of a team of six lawyers in Paris led by partners Diane Mullenex and Frédéric Ichay. Mullenex is recognised for her telecoms and media, IT and gambling and gaming expertise while Ichay is noted for his M&A experience in the telecoms and media field. Marc Dautlich is head of the information law team and focuses on data protection, freedom of information, technology and e-commerce matters. Annabelle Richard is admitted to practice in France and New York and is noted for her experience in e-commerce, online gaming and gambling, data protection and cyber-security.
Pinsent Masons’ life sciences practice expanded in 2013 with a team hire including Paul Ranson and Allistair Booth. The hire completes the firm’s full-service offering in the sector. Ranson advises on the regulatory and commercial needs of the industry and is an “authority” on marketing authorisation, pricing and reimbursement issues. Booth focuses on commercial transactions in the sector including licensing, collaboration and partnering deals. Clare Tunstall is singled out for her “sensational” work in the area of patent litigation. Her recent cases include acting for Teva in patent revocation proceedings against Lundbeck.
The firm’s corporate responsibility programme named Starfish, which takes its inspiration from the writings of Loren Eiseley, focuses on two areas: partnering with local communities and SOS Children’s villages. Pinsent Mason’s global partner SOS Children looks after children who as a result of disease, war, natural disaster or abandonment have lost their parents. Each village supports up to 150 children and contains educational, medical and social facilities. The firm assists by supporting the UK headquarters, raising funds for villages and visiting the sites.
According to Pinsent Masons, a diverse workforce allows clients to benefit from a range and depth of knowledge and experience. In recent years the firm has created an in-house diversity employee network that spans offices, practice groups and roles. Gender balance is a key focus and currently over 20 per cent of partners are female, despite this being above average for top 20 law firms the firm is keen to improve the figure.
Following the firm’s 2012 merger with Scottish firm McGrigors, the firm has increased its global presence with offices in Munich, Paris and Istanbul. The goal is to be truly global by 2020 and at present the firm certainly appears to be on track.
