At the end of 2013 Mayer Brown promoted 22 of its practitioners worldwide to partner, effective as of January 2014. The London office also saw two lateral hires in October last year, adding weight to the firm’s banking and finance group, and the corporate practice in China also grew, with a M&A partner joining the Shanghai office and a consultant with expertise in IPOs and finance beefing up the team in Beijing.

PEOPLE AND PLACES

Mayer Brown excels in the field of competition law its practice comprises over 70 lawyers in its offices around the world. In Washington, DC, the “superb” Robert Bloch is renowned for his defence of major national corporations, non-profit entities and corporate officials in both criminal and civil investigations before the antitrust division of the US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. In Chicago, Andrew Marovitz is described as a “standout” practitioner. He is one of the firm’s practice leaders in its global litigation group, focusing on competition litigation and is “frequently seen” representing national and multinational corporations in monopolisation, attempted monopolisation, price fixing, market allocation and conspiracy cases. At the same office, Lee Abrams is highly nominated for his litigation skills in the fields of both competition and franchise law. He boasts an enviable client list, including many prominent names for competition (General Motors, Ford Motor, NewsCorp, Eastman Kodak and Sears Roebuck) and for franchise (Dairy Queen Operators, Pizza Hut franchisee association, Midas franchisee association and Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust).

The firm boasts an extensive labour and employment practice and its clients include members of the Fortune 500, FTSE 100, DAX and Hang Seng. The “hugely talented” Nicholas Robertson leads the London employment group and is greatly valued for his “high-quality client service”. Hong Kong-based Duncan Abate is the “go-to guy” in Asia for clients in need of advice on employee benefits law and regulation. He is especially sought after for his expertise on the establishment, maintenance and restructuring of occupational retirement schemes and mandatory provident fund schemes. In Chicago, the “stellar” Marcia Goodman represents global employers on a wide range of US and cross-border employment law matters and is a “big name” in discrimination cases under the equal employment opportunity laws.

Capital markets is another strong area of practice for the firm and it boasts leading lawyers in the key financial centres of the Americas, Asia and Europe. Stuart Litwin is co-head of the firm’s structured finance and capital markets practice and also co-leads the global finance practice. He is hailed as a “first-class securitisations expert” who boasts experience in almost every type of asset. He is especially singled out for his work involving the securitisation and financing of retail and commercial auto loans and leases. He garners recognition for both his structured finance and debt and equity abilities in this field.

Hong Kong-based Andrew MacGeoch achieves more listings than any other individual at the firm and is recognised for his franchise, real estate, and sports and entertainment expertise. He heads the firm’s Asia hospitality and leisure group and its real estate development and commercial team. He is especially renowned for his expertise in the hotel sector, having acted for over 50 hotel and lodging brands throughout the region including the Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton and Marriott.

 

PRO BONO

Mayer Brown strongly encourages its lawyers to participate in its pro bono programme and provides credit for the hours they donate. Three lawyers manage the programme and work with its global pro bono committee and local and regional committees to ensure it has a diverse programme that benefits the communities in which it operates. Recently the firm’s programme has seen several notable successes, with individuals from the firm’s Los Angeles offices playing an integral in securing the release of an immigration detainee on bond after five years. The firm has also been very involved in a scheme to resettle Iraqis in danger, donating 9,000 hours and helping to bring over 300 Iraqi refugees to safety and in Cambodia lawyers have been involved in a legal education programme organised by the East-West Management Institute.

 

DIVERSITY

The firm is committed to diversity and inclusion and has a committee which directs its efforts in this area. This includes extensive outreach programmes, promoting lawyer participation in diversity panels and symposia, overseeing diversity association sponsorship and giving, mentoring diverse associates and implementing measures for the recruitment, retention and promotion of diverse candidates. LOOKING FORWARD

Practitioners at the firm have had an exceptionally busy start to the year, with partners seen on many high-profile matters. Lawyers from London and Hong Kong offices advised ING Bank, Singapore Branch, as arranger and book runner on the issuance by MIAT Mongolian Airlines of $20 million floating rate guaranteed notes due in December 2018. Frankfurt and Düsseldorf-based practitioners acted for Curzon Capital Partners III on the acquisition of a shopping centre in Witten, in North Rhine-Westphalia, from inter alia CONCEPTA Projektentwicklung and Westdeutsche ImmobilienBank. Also, at the end of January 2014, the firm counselled the Trade and Development Bank of Mongolia on the country’s first ever “dim sum” bond offering. The firm is set to continue its involvement in significant, cutting-edge deals for the foreseeable future and its lawyers will maintain their focus on providing excellent, high-quality service to clients.
