The firm subscribes to the “one firm” economics mantra and became one of the first US law firms to establish a firm-wide project management department. This department ensures that all staff are able to plan, budget and manage client matters as cost-effectively and efficiently as possible. This allows the team to maintain a satisfied client base and serves to sustain its reputation for making sure that “clients come first”.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES

As a leading adviser to financial services firms, asset managers and investment funds, Dechert is “well equipped” to handle a variety of matters in the private funds sphere. In DC, David Vaughan is a “very strong” hedge fund lawyer. He advises managers in relation to fund formation, distribution and compliance issues. George Mazin in New York gives “stellar” advice to clients on the structuring of domestic and offshore private funds while Peter Astleford is “highly recommended” for his expertise in financial services regulatory work and onshore and offshore funds. Based in the firm’s London office, he is also the co-chair of the global financial services group and chair of its European branch.

Dechert’s antitrust team is renowned for its “superb” work and its lawyers helped rewrite the law on class certification and summary judgment in antitrust cases in the seminal Hydrogen Peroxide decision. Paul Denis advises on the antitrust implications of business practices in DC and is well regarded for his “intelligence and creativity”. Paul Friedman is a “fantastic” litigator and regularly serves as lead counsel in multi-defendant class and non-class action matters. In New York, Michael Weiner co-chairs the antitrust/competition group. His “impressive” client list includes Yahoo! who he represented in its joint venture with Microsoft and its proposed distribution relationship with Google. The “talented” Hans Jürgen Meyer-Lindemann practises German and European competition law and has handled a number of high-profile merger control cases before the European Commission.

The firm’s IP department is “highly proficient” in all forms of litigation, counselling, regulatory and transactional matters. Anne-Laure Marcerou is “internationally renowned” for her work in the regulatory and transactional fields. Based in Paris, she assists US and European pharmaceutical and medical devices companies. David Schulman is an “excellent” life sciences practitioner with a “wealth of experience” advising life sciences and technology-based companies on matters including corporate transactions and distribution arrangements.

In the arbitration field, Eduardo Silva Romero is a “highly sought after” practitioner with an active international arbitration practice. He is particularly proficient in the energy sector. Pierre Mayer is also based in Paris and is an “exceptional” arbitrator. He has experience in international trade, technology transfer and oil and gas.

Dechert lawyers handle white-collar matters in areas including government contract fraud, insider trading and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations. The white-collar defence and securities team numbers more than 90 lawyers based throughout Dechert’s offices worldwide. In London, Jonathan Pickworth advises clients on regulatory and internal investigations. He is regarded as the “go-to guy” for bribery and corruption cases. Neil Gerrard is deputy chair of the global litigation practice and is an “expert” in the field of white-collar crime relating to the corporate sector. In New York, Andrew Levander represents parties in securities fraud and criminal and government investigations. His “excellent” work includes litigation arising out of the global financial crisis and clients have included the former CEOs of Barclays and Merrill Lynch.

PRO BONO

The firm has a dedicated partner who works full-time on managing the pro bono programme. In 2012 the firm spent more than 80,000 hours on pro bono activities worldwide, highlighting its commitment to helping those in need. Lawyers participate in a wide range of areas including civil rights, child advocacy and access to public benefits. Dechert has been recognised for many years for its pro bono contributions and is dedicated to ensuring universal participation in its programme.

DIVERSITY

The diversity committee focuses on three areas: recruitment, professional development and community outreach. The Global Women’s Initiative is an example of the firm’s efforts to promote diversity. The group meets regularly with the firm’s leadership to implement initiatives that promote opportunities for women throughout the firm. The firm also has a director of diversity who forms part of the global talent team and is responsible for the “strategic oversight and implementation of the diversity efforts of the firm”.

LOOKING FORWARD

Dechert prides itself on being a firm that is focused on sectors “with the greatest complexities and highest regulatory demands”. Over the past year, additions have been made to the corporate, tax, litigation and financial services groups. It is anticipated that the firm will make further additions in order to expand its local and global capabilities in key jurisdictions to remain a “pioneering” global firm.
