Walkers - The Who's Who Legal 100 2014

What is the Who's Who Legal 100?

At the start of 2013 Walkers moved into new “state of the art” headquarters in George Town, Grand Cayman. Reasons behind the move include supporting leading-edge technology, better facilities for staff and clients and capacity to meet future growth expectations. With innovation as one of the “defining characteristics” of the firm, the new offices reflect its commitment to improving the working environment as well as preserving the natural environment.

As a leading international financial centre law firm, Walkers provides legal services to Fortune 100 and FTSE 100 global corporations, financial institutions and middle market companies from its offshore and onshore bases. Its vision is based on three pillars – clients, people and business and the firm earns a “global” reputation as the offshore law firm of choice for many clients.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES

The global investment funds group offers BVI, Cayman Islands, Irish and Jersey law advice on all aspects of the legal and regulatory issues surrounding the creation, launch and maintenance of investment fund products. The private equity group acts for some of the world’s largest and most successful private equity firms. David Brennand is a “talented” funds lawyer. Sources praise him for his ability to “combine a high level of technical skills with a true understanding of the client’s needs”. Rolf Lindsay’s practice encompasses the structuring of fund sponsor vehicles and the formation of alternative investment funds. Mark Lewis is also recommended, particularly for his “high level expertise” in the hedge funds space. Global managing partner Ingrid Pierce is a “terrific” lawyer. She advises fiduciaries and represents major institutions in all aspects of investment funds law.

In the insolvency and corporate recovery sphere, lawyers work on complex cross-border restructurings, contentious and non-contentious insolvencies, litigation and distressed situations. Colette Wilkins is an “expert” in contentious restructuring and insolvency. She is experienced in disputes connected to corporate governance, hedge funds, fraud and liquidations. Neil Lupton advises stakeholders, creditors, debtors and insolvency practitioners on a variety of contentious insolvency matters. Robert Foote joined the firm’s Singapore office in 2013 as senior counsel and is an “excellent adviser” on insolvency, restructuring and asset recovery matters.

In Hong Kong, Andy Randall is a member of the structured products and capital markets team. He is described as a “corporate specialist” and is highly recommended for his structured finance work, as is Alex Carus who is located in the Jersey office.

COMMUNITY

Walkers supports charitable causes across the world with a focus on arts and educational initiatives for children, and conservation programmes. In 2000 the firm launched the “Walkers Charity Day” for local organisations seeking sponsorship. Potential receivers present to the firm’s charity committee who then decides how to allocate the charitable budget for the year. For the 2013 financial year, the committee allocated over CI$100,000 to 20 local charities and community causes including the Cayman Crisis Centre, the Cayman Heart Fund and Caring for Life Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD

The firm has recently focused on expanding its offering in the Asia-Pacific region with key hires to the Singapore and Hong Kong offices towards the end of 2013. With the increasing client demand for advice on offshore issues, it is likely that the firm will continue to concentrate its efforts on this region.
