The news followed the appointment of 10 new partners in 2013 as well as several strategic hires to boost existing practices. PEOPLE AND PRACTICES
Maples and Calder is a “market leader” in the private funds sphere. The firm has strong relationships with the industry and in 2010 acted for 38 per cent of all hedge funds and 44 per cent of all exempted limited partnerships formed in the Cayman Islands. On top of this, the Irish funds group advised on over 33 per cent of all new funds established in the market in 2012. Jon Fowler is the global head of the investment funds group and specialises in hedge fund and private equity fund formation. He is a “dominant figure” in the market and is “very well respected”. Iain McMurdo is the global head of the firm’s private equity group. He focuses on the formation of private equity funds and advises on their downstream transactions. He also advises on the ongoing maintenance of hedge funds. David Brooks is noted for his “encyclopaedic knowledge” of the funds industry. He represents managers and financial institutions in the establishment of offshore hedge funds and private equity funds. Heidi de Vries advises on the establishment of Cayman Islands and BVI companies and partnerships and is known for providing “sound advice”. Henry Smith is global managing partner of the firm and is a “notable figure” in the market. He is also recommended for his banking law expertise. Paul Govier heads the investment funds group in London and is particularly knowledgeable in private equity and hedge funds. Peter Stapleton in Dublin advises on the establishment, structuring, financing, public and private distribution and ongoing operation of UCITs and AIFS including hedge funds, funds of funds, master-feeders, private equity funds, managed account platforms and bespoke structures.
Private client is a further area of practice in which the firm distinguishes itself as a leader. The practice comprises of 12 partners and associates working across its offices in the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, London, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore. Justin Appleyard is in charge of the global trusts group and advises on trust and fiduciary law matters. His practice emphasises the use of trusts in commercial and corporate transactions. Nigel Porteous advises private individuals and multinational banks and trust companies and is often consulted on matters relating to the management of trust business and the mitigation of risk. He is the “first port of call” for complex trust structures according to clients. Tony Pursall in London is “top notch” on private trusts and charity and estate planning issues and is considered an “authoritative voice” in the industry.
The dispute resolution practice focuses on delivering “fast, accurate and pragmatic advice”. Arabella di Iorio is the managing partner of the BVI office and head of the office’s litigation and trusts practice groups. She is noted for her “exceptional practice” in the areas of private client, asset recovery and commercial litigation. Colin McKie QC is “very able” and has a broad international disputes practice including fraud, asset tracing and recovery, trusts disputes, shareholder disputes and corporate rescues.
Further recognition goes to Nollaig Murphy, head of the finance group and co-head of the restructuring group in Dublin. He is recognised for his banking and capital markets expertise and recently advised Avolon, the international aircraft leasing group on a US$636 million asset-backed securitisation issued by Emerald Aviation Finance Ltd.

Within its local communities Maples and Calder makes charitable donations through its foundation covering causes such as the prevention of child abuse.
