What is the Who's Who Legal 100?

Established almost 50 years ago, Maples and Calder has grown into a highly successful law firm with a substantial global footprint and a dominating private funds practice. The firm is our Cayman Islands law firm of the year with 14 lawyers listed from the region, however its presence is not confined to the Cayman Islands. The firm has additional offices in London, Dubai and a growing practice in Asia with a new office in Singapore adding weight to its successful base in Hong Kong. We list 26 inclusions from the firm over eight practice areas.

Practice Area Breakdown
Asset Recovery 3 Construction 1
Aviation 2 Insolvency & Restructuring 1
Banking 1 Insurance & Reinsurance 1
Commercial Litigation 2 Private Funds 15

Maples and Calder is our private funds firm of the year with a total of 15 listings, more than any other firm in our research. The firm has substantial strength in this area and acts for eight of the 20 largest private equity fund managers and after several lateral hires in March 2012, it now boasts over 39 partners in the practice. Over half of the firm’s listings are from its Cayman Islands office, including Iain McMurdo, global head of the firm’s private equity group, and one of the most highly regarded individuals in our research. He receives great praise for his “focused and creative” work and is “the best in the Caymans” according to our sources. Jon Fowler is global head of the investment funds group and is a “prominent figure” in the field. He represents a wide variety of clients and specialises in fund formation. David Brooks is a “very talented” practitioner who impresses our respondents with his “in-depth financial understanding”. He is the chairman of MaplesFS, a leading provider of fiduciary and fund services. Henry Smith, global managing partner of Maples and Calder worldwide, is a “trusted advisor” to many high profile funds. The “superb” Sheryl Dean represents a variety of clients from large sponsors to start up investment managers. Her “accurate advice” and “client-oriented practice” have made her a favourite among our respondents. Kieran Walsh, global head of the firm’s BVI law practice and co-head of its Latin America practice, is “simply astounding” and “exceptionally knowledgeable”. His corporate practice covers work in investment funds and structured finance for Latin American companies and business trying to invest in the region. Heidi de Vries and Gwyneth Rees are recent additions to the firm. De Vries “excels” in the structuring, formation and maintenance of offshore investment funds while Rees represents a range of investment managers and specialises in advising funds on managing distress.

Outside the Cayman Islands, Richard May is “well known” and “highly respected” for his work in the structuring, formation and financing of investment and private equity funds. He is head of the firm’s corporate and investment funds group in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Based in Dublin, Barry McGrath specialises in financial services law and the promotion and operation of all types of mutual funds while Peter Stapleton has a broad practice in fund formation and maintenance. Spencer Privett is head of the firm’s investment funds and trusts teams in Hong Kong and is admired for his “brilliant legal mind”. Anthony Webster, head of the firm’s private equity practice in Asia, is a “distinguished specialist” and has advised on the Cayman and BVI aspects of over 300 funds. Dubai-based Tahir Jawed is a “strong asset of the firm” and is known for his “unique expertise” in the offshore structuring of Islamic financial products. He is “always on top of market developments”. Paul Govier is head of the investment funds group in London and has an “extremely active” practice in the formation and maintenance of a wide variety of funds.

As well as an incredibly successful private funds practice, Maples and Calder is also strong in asset recovery and three “excellent” lawyers are listed in this area. Mac Imrie is a “tough litigator” and “hard-working, calm and professional under pressure”. Based in the Cayman Islands, he focuses on mutual and hedge fund disputes and crisis situations. Colin McKie and Arabella Di Iorio feature in both our asset recovery and commercial litigation chapters. McKie is a “distinguished advocate” noted for his performances before the Grand Court and the Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands while the “talented” Di Iorio has “vast expertise” in complex, cross border litigation. She is the managing partner of Maples BVI and the head of the BVI litigation and trusts practice groups.

Mark Western is a financing expert specialising in aviation. His “incisive legal mind” and “creative problem solving” have impressed our respondents. David Maughan, whose “diligence”, joins him and “knowledge of market pressures” has created a successful practice which includes the establishment of aircraft leasing and joint venture companies in Ireland.

With a new office recently opened in Singapore and the lateral hire of seven leading partners into its investment funds group, Maples and Calder promises to continue to grow in excellence in 2013.
