The antitrust and competition practice holds more than 150 lawyers worldwide. Lawyers handle a number of high-profile cases across a variety of industry sectors. Recent experience includes representing American Airlines in the antitrust investigation relating to its $11 billion merger with US Airways. In Washington, DC, Kathryn Fenton is a “definite inclusion” for her work advising on merger reviews, defending government investigations and counselling on corporate transactions. Phillip Proger is a “top-notch” practitioner who specialises in mergers and cartel investigations and antitrust litigation. Joe Sims has a “terrific” practice involving the full range of counselling and litigation matters while John Majoras is “simply superb” with more than two decades of experience in the field. In Belgium, Bernard Amory heads the European competition practice. He is “well reputed” for his European competition work and is also one of the most highly regarded individuals in the telecoms and media field.

The construction team provides the full range of legal support for all related matters including project initiation, dispute resolution and litigation. Andrew Ness is “one of the smartest in the business”. He helps solve complex construction and design-related problems and serves as lead counsel on a wide variety of construction disputes. David Buoncristiani is “very well respected” in the field. He has a wealth of litigation experience focuses on construction industry disputes. Stephen O’Neal is “well known” for his projects practice and has represented clients in the US and worldwide.

Jones Day’s business restructuring and reorganising team are “renowned” for advising debtors, creditors and other partners in complex insolvency and restructuring matters. Corinne Ball is a “prominent” figure focusing on complex corporate reorganisations and distressed acquisitions. Bruce Bennett represents debtors, creditors and business acquirors in industries including retail, telecommunications and energy.

A number of business crime defence lawyers working within the corporate criminal investigations practice are highly regarded for their work in this field. Brian Sun is a “superior” lawyer with a practice covering the full spectrum of business crimes. Peter Romatowski looks after the firm’s securities litigation and SEC enforcement practice. He also has an “extraordinarily good” transactional practice for which he is also recognised. US-based Janet McNicholas is “highly proficient” in the full spectrum of life sciences work with knowledge in the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical products.

Jones Day features a “first class” labour and employment practice with more than 130 practitioners across the globe. In Washington DC, Eric Dreiband represents companies in discrimination, whistle-blower and wage and hour investigations. He is praised for his “astute legal mind”. Fred Alvarez is a Silicon Valley-based lawyer and a “top choice” for clients in the technology, retail and oilfields.



As well as having a full-time firmwide partner in charge of pro bono dealing with local and international projects, each office also has a partner-in-charge to organise and develop the firm’s various pro bono commitments. The firm’s recent experience includes securing a $137,696 restitution award in a case involving human trafficking and forced labour. Abroad, a team of lawyers led a commercial law training programme in Myanmar in February 2014 with the aim of enhancing young lawyers’ business expertise. The Day of Service was an event implemented in 2012 and one which is quickly spreading among the firm’s global offices. The event sees an office select a project appropriate for its community. The Jones Day Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded in 1987 which provides financial support to organisations promoting the rule of law and improving the living and economic conditions for those in developing countries.



The Jones Day Diversity Task Force (DTF) was formed in 1987 and meets to set priorities and organise local and firm wide diversity initiatives. Along with outreach efforts, the firm also has a mentoring scheme and regularly organises or participates in events aimed at increasing diversity in the legal profession.



Jones Day’s extensive international reach is growing, with the firm rapidly expanding across a number of continents. With its eyes firmly set on strategic markets, the firm is aiming to increase its capabilities in the projects, infrastructure and energy sectors. This was highlighted by the creation of a dedicated projects and infrastructure practice group in 2013.  The firm also plans to initially focus on projects and energy work in the new Perth office.
