Jones Day makes an overwhelmingly strong showing in our competition research, with 17 lawyers featured in the chapter. Bernard Amory oversees the antitrust and competition practice in Europe and is “highly regarded in the market”. He frequently represents clients such as Renault and Procter & Gamble before national courts, competition authorities and the European Commission, predominantly on matters relating to restrictive practices and abuse of market dominance, and is also highly nominated in our regulatory communications chapter. Also in Brussels is the “exceptional” Vincent Brophy, who acts extensively for financial institutions and large corporations in merger reviews and joint ventures, as well as advising on cartels and regulations. Thomas Jestaedt has over 20 years’ experience and is lauded as a “brilliant source of advice”. The firm’s DC office fields five names including Kathryn Fenton, who advises clients from the media, life sciences and consumer goods industries on the antitrust issues associated with complex corporate transactions. Colleague Bruce McDonald focuses his advice on the energy, transportation and telecommunications industries, also acting as a litigator. Joe Sims is “a font of knowledge” on government antitrust regulations and clients rate him as “the go-to guy in Washington”. Peter Wang represents the firm in Asia, leading the antitrust practice in China. He is noted as “dedicated and extremely intelligent” and is praised for his work on complex government antitrust investigations. Several more lawyers across the US and Europe are recognised for their expertise, including Paris-based Eric Barbier de la Serre who is noted for his practice focusing on litigation, merger control and state aid.

Continuing on a theme of strong litigation, six lawyers are recommended in our business crime defence chapter. In New York, Charles Carberry is co-chair of the corporate criminal investigations practice and is a “first-class advocate”, having acted in a huge range of white-collar crime trials. He further demonstrates his expertise as a frequent seminar speaker and prolific author of business crime articles. Lauded for the international nature of his practice, George Moscarino is “hugely respected” for his years of experience in high-profile business crime matters, including acting for national banks. Brian Sun is a “formidable trial lawyer” and is rated for his experience across the spectrum of business crimes and James Wooley is “extremely impressive”.

The firm performs equally well on the finance side. Seven insolvency experts are listed, including business restructuring head Paul Leake. He is a “master” in restructuring and “always gets the best result for the client”. Colleague Corinne Ball co-heads the practice and is lauded for her expertise in corporate restructuring. She is voted by peers and clients alike as a “very active player”. “Successful advocate” Kevyn Orr is highly regarded, as is “technical expert” Michael Rutstein. David Heiman is a “statesman” of insolvency and restructuring, having represented debtors, creditors and lenders in various matters.

DC-based Raymond Wiacek oversees the firm’s global tax practice and is regarded as a “high flyer”, having represented leading corporations and financial institutions including Morgan Stanley. Carolyn Lee’s “extensive experience” earns her a nomination in our corporate tax chapter – she covers a wide range of state and local taxation issues in transactional and controversial matters. International tax expert Howard Liebman heads the firm’s tax practice in Brussels and is “incredibly knowledgeable” in handling the tax aspects of cross-border mergers and transactions. Fuli Cao specialises in transactions between China and other countries, and clients praise his “practical and sensible” approach to advising on their needs. Vincent Agulhon is noted for his “commercial awareness” and “understanding of the market”.

The firm also excels in numerous other areas. Anthony Muratore features in both our life sciences and patents chapters – he is recognised as “superb” for the scope of his intellectual property expertise and has acted extensively for biotech, pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. Tony Wassaf is a “go-to guy” for mining and is also “highly recommended” for his work in the oil and gas field. He is “commercially focused” and has helped oil and gas companies around the world achieve “innovative” solutions. Wolfgang Büchner is recommended for his technology expertise, particularly within IT and e-commerce. He also frequently advises on data protection.
