Norton Rose - The Who's Who Legal 100 2013

What is the Who's Who Legal 100?

LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR- MINING

Editor's Note - This article was published before the firm's combination with Fulbright & Jaworski.

It is a time of growth for Norton Rose. In 2012, the firm entered Latin America and Central Asia for the first time and strengthened its position in Canada through a merger with Macleod Dixon. Later in the year, it opened a new office in Dar es Salaam, adding to the firm’s presence in Africa which now boasts five offices and covers more than 40 African jurisdictions. This year promises to be an equally busy time for Norton Rose as it prepares to merge with US firm Fulbright & Jaworski in June 2013. Following the merger, Norton Rose Fulbright will boast an incredible 3,800 lawyers across 54 offices, including 11 in the US. Despite this international growth, Norton Rose remains dedicated to the quality of its professionals and the provision of a world-class service to clients. The firm garners 137 inclusions across an impressive 29 practice areas demonstrating its brilliance in almost all of our practice areas.

The firm’s life sciences practice is “second to none”. Norton Rose garners 17 listings across the intellectual property, product liability, regulatory and transactional sub-sections, demonstrating the impressive breadth of its practice. Three lawyers appear in both the IP and regulatory sections: Adrienne Blanchard and Judith Robinson in Montreal and Patrick Kierans in Toronto. Kierans is head of the firm’s pharmaceuticals and life sciences sector and has “a thorough understanding” of key regulatory concerns as well as being an expert on IP law. Melbourne-based Bernard O’Shea also achieves a dual listing in this chapter in the regulatory and transactional sub-sections. He is highly experienced in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries and his expertise covers research, clinical trials, product developments and commercialisation, as well as licensing and marketing arrangements. Gino Martel in Montreal and Jeremy Grushcow in Toronto are both highly recommended for their transactional life sciences expertise. The firm achieves three listings in the product liability subsection, among them William McNamara, a “top-notch litigator”.We feature 15 Norton Rose lawyers in our oil and gas chapter. The firm is best represented by its offices in London and Caracas. Philip Vallance is an “eminent” financing professional who acts for providers, arrangers and consumers. He is joined in London by Nick Prowse and Eleanor Martin. Prowse has “extensive experience” in advising on both upstream and downstream projects and has a worldwide practice. He represents international clients on high-end transactions and ventures. We also list lawyers from Canada, Australia, Singapore, Russia, Italy and the Netherlands in this chapter, demonstrating the impressive international capacity of the firm. With a vast global footprint, it is no surprise that Norton Rose excels in aviation and we feature 14 lawyers from six of the firm’s offices in this chapter. Over the last year they have been a dominant force in the marketplace with high profile matters such as acting for Cathay Pacific in an on-going competition investigation and representing Natixis in a complex, cross border dispute involving leases in default. Lead partner in this case, Patrick Farrell is “one of the stars of the firm” with a practice that centres on international disputes for airlines, banks, lessors, financiers and insurers. It has an exceptionally successful practice having recently advised Tizir on the issuance of a $150 million Nordic bond and advised Allied Gold Mining PLC on a $360 million recommended acquisition by St Barbara Mining Limited. We feature nine lawyers from the practice. Yerzhan Kumarov, managing partner of its Almaty office, is a “leading expert” in the region in mining and infrastructure financing. Jorge A Neher is one of two lawyers included from the firm’s Bogotá office. He is a “very talented lawyer” who advises major and junior mining companies on a wide range of issues including financing, transactions and precious stones.
