Norton Rose - The Who's Who Legal 100 2014

What is the Who's Who Legal 100?

FIRM OF THE YEAR - ENERGY, MINING

2013 saw the creation of Norton Rose Fulbright following the June merger of UK firm Norton Rose and US firm Fulbright & Jaworski. The firm is now one of the largest in the world by revenue and number of lawyers, and boasts multiple offices on every continent. Peter Martyr is global chief executive of this “international heavyweight”, having been managing partner of Norton Rose since 2002 during which time he oversaw the firm’s successful expansion into Australia, Canada, Latin America and South Africa, as well as the union with Fulbright & Jaworski.

Furthermore, eight lawyers at Norton Rose Fulbright’s US member firm were promoted to partners boosting the IP, M&A, investigations and SEC enforcement, and commercial litigation practices. The firm also recently announced its unique corporate partnership with the Mercedes McLaren Formula One team, which also sees it become global legal adviser to the McLaren Group; the only partnership between a global legal practice and a Formula One team in the world today.

PEOPLE AND PRACTICES

Energy is one of Norton Rose Fulbright’s strongest areas of practice and the firm is awarded the title of energy law firm of the year 2014 following its tremendous performance in our research. Simon Currie, the firm’s global head of energy, is a “real expert” in the development, financing and acquisition of power projects and multi-sourced project financings and is recognised for his “exceptional skills” in both these areas. The “brilliant” Michael Irvin is one a trio of lawyers singled out from the Houston office. He leads the energy transactional group in the US and his “first-class counsel” is sought after by clients across the energy industry, including natural gas and pipeline companies and oil and gas exploration and production companies. Of counsel George Kutzschbach is also “very highly regarded” in this sector due to his extensive experience in oil and gas transactions. Head of the firm’s Latin America group Elisabeth Eljuri is hailed as a “superstar” by peers around the globe due to her “outstanding legal expertise and business acumen”. Based in Caracas, she is “frequently seen on major deals” in this area and is also lauded for her expertise in mining, project finance, commercial litigation and arbitration.

Norton Rose Fulbright is also the recipient of our mining award this year and Martin McCann, the global head of infrastructure, mining and commodities, garners particularly high praise. His practice focuses on international mining and infrastructure finance and clients value his “wide-ranging knowledge” that covers all aspects of the industry. Johannesburg-based Michael Dale leads the firm’s mining law division and is a council member of the section on energy, environmental, natural resources and infrastructural law of the International Bar Association. He is lauded for his “outstanding technical abilities” and “deep understanding” of mining law. In Toronto, Marvin Singer is considered a “key player in the Canadian legal market” who also boasts a “wealth of experience” in projects across Africa and the former USSR. He is able to advise on all aspects of projects from acquisition through to debt and equity financings, and development and completion.

The firm is very strongly represented in our aviation research, with nine of the firm’s offices represented demonstrating its strength in this field across its international network. Munich-based Ralf Springer is global head of aviation and is hailed as “one of the foremost aviation finance practitioners” in Europe. He is especially notable for his asset financing and leasing work, with a strong domestic and international client base. The “excellent” Leigh Borrello is a “leading figure” in the Asia-Pacific region. He acts for financial institutions, arrangers, leasing companies and investors particularly on pre-delivery financings, the sale and purchase of aircraft, cross-border and domestic aircraft leases and airline mergers. London-based awyer Owen Mulholland is “frequently seen” on major transactions and he recently acted for the European Export Credit Agencies on a $1.4 billion ECA-supported Operating Lease Facility for AerCap.

PRO BONO

Norton Rose Fulbright is committed to giving back to the communities in which it operates through pro bono work. The firm’s offices around the globe work with local organisations such as a selection of law centres in the UK, Wayside Chapel in Australia and the World Trade Centre Foundation in the US.  In recent years its lawyers have been involved in many notable cases, including volunteering at an emergency law clinic to help victims hit by Hurricane Sandy in the Queens, New York and helping two Texas inmates on death row, resulting in their sentences being reversed in the Texas federal court.

DIVERSITY

Norton Rose Fulbright is committed to providing an inclusive environment, which it considers a key ingredient to its success as a firm. In 2012 it established a global diversity and inclusion advisory council to provide a source of coordinated and consistent leadership to establish and advocate diversity and inclusion best practice across the firm’s international network of offices and groups.

LOOKING FORWARD

2013 saw the birth of Norton Rose Fulbright and it seems that this global heavyweight is not resting on its laurels. The firm is keen to grow its New York office according to Martyr, and there are indications that it is planning to extend its reach on the West Coast, with Silicon Valley being one of several areas under consideration. There are also plans to enter Brazil, Turkey and South Korea in the next few years and the firm’s South Africa managing director, Rob Otty, has indicated the firm’s desire to expand in the Africa region, pointing out Nigeria, Egypt, Mozambique and Angola as potential jurisdictions of interest.
