Aviation law is undoubtedly one of the firm’s strongest areas. With 19 lawyers listed across seven offices in five continents, Clyde & Co is unbeatable in terms of the quality of its practitioners and its global reach, a crucial factor in such an international industry. The London office is best represented, with 11 lawyers featured. Philip Perrotta, head of the aviation finance group, is a “prominent figure” in the area and works for global aircraft lenders, lessors and operators. He is joined by Mark Bisset, a “well-known and highly regarded” lawyer specialising in the business jet market. On the insurance side, David Willcox has an “established” practice in major aviation catastrophe work including the management of complex multi-jurisdictional claims. Philip Bass is a “leading talent” and “superb negotiator” on aviation liability claims. He has a private pilot’s licence and is a past chairman of the aviation committee of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association. Maria Cetta is “held in high regard” in relation to her aviation liability practice which covers hull claims, major accidents and insurance coverage.

In Paris, Maylis Casati-Ollier is a “leading specialist” with a reputation as being both “exceptionally knowledgeable” and a “hard and tough negotiator”. Her practice covers matters arising from major aircraft accidents as well as counselling and dispute resolution for airlines and their insurers. Peng Lim leads the aviation team in the firm’s Singapore office and is praised for her “adept handling of complex international disputes”. Based in Dubai, Oliver Tebbit has 10 years’ experience in asset finance transactions and specialises in the business jet market. The firm also has a strong presence in the US, with four lawyers listed from offices in New York and San Francisco. Andrew Harakas is “the number-one aviation practitioner in the states” for many of our respondents and is “particularly active in the market”. Harakas has over 25 years of experience litigating within the industry and has testified before US Senate committees regarding proposed legislative changes to aviation law. Also based in New York, Diane Westwood Wilson has “superb technical understanding” and is an expert in insurance litigation while Christopher Carlsen has over 21 years of experience and is a “true leader” in dispute resolution. Kevin Sutherland leads the aviation and aerospace practice group in San Francisco, where he defends high-profile clients.

Clyde & Co also has a leading global practice in insurance and reinsurance. We list 16 “gold-standard” lawyers from seven offices around the world. The firm has an exceptionally strong presence in England and fields six exceptional professionals. Senior partner of the firm Michael Payton is a “world class name” in insurance and acts for domestic and international underwriters and insurers. Head of the reinsurance team Nigel Brook is praised for his “incisive mind” and “in-depth understanding of the field”. He deals with international reinsurance disputes for a range of companies and syndicates. Andrew Holderness, the firm’s global head of corporate insurance, is a corporate finance specialist within the insurance sector. There are also “standout” lawyers in Clyde & Co’s US offices. Based in New York, Michael Knoerzer is a “strong advocate” and has an “exceptional” practice which focuses on reinsurance claims, life and health insurance, credit disputes and insurance insolvency matters. Paul Koepff has an “excellent” reputation and over 30 years’ experience in dispute resolution. In San Francisco, Joan D’Ambrosio is a “fine lawyer” and “very experienced in coverage matters”. She is joined by Peter Whalen, who has particular expertise representing umbrella insurance carriers in high-profile cases. In June 2011, Clyde & Co merged with Canadian firm Nicholl Paskell-Mede, resulting in some excellent additions to the firm’s insurance practice. John Nicholl concentrates on liability defence as well as coverage advice and litigation. He is “incredibly knowledgeable” and “the one to have on your side”. Another “superb” coverage lawyer in Toronto is Mary Margaret Fox who specialises in directors’ and officers’ liability and errors and omissions liability policies.

The firm has a growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region after opening two offices in Australia in October 2012. In Sydney, Oscar Shub is “well known all over the globe” for his “brilliant” work in insurance and reinsurance disputes, while Dean Carrigan has over 20 years of experience in strategic advice and major disputes and John Edmond provides “accessible, client oriented counsel” on defence and coverage issues. Edmond is head of the Australian offices of Clyde & Co. Further afield, Dubai-based Wayne Jones is head of the region’s insurance and reinsurance team. Jones has a broad practice including regulatory work and commercial disputes for clients in the Middle East.

The firm boasts five “top-notch” construction lawyers, the majority of whom are based in the Middle East. In Dubai, the “prominent” Mark Blanksby has over 19 years’ experience in construction and, after eight years working in the Middle East, is an authoritative figure in the region. Michael Grose is “simply excellent” and has impressed clients with his “professionalism” and “pragmatic advice”. As one respondent remarked, “he is without doubt one of the top lawyers”. Based in Doha, Laura Warren advises on Qatar law and standard form and bespoke contracts. She is responsible for the dispute resolution practice in the region and acts on international arbitrations as well as in local courts. Ian Cocking is head of the Hong Kong and China construction group. He has “a wealth of experience” in this area and has impressed our respondents with his “clear advice” and “strategic and beneficial solutions”. Cocking is also one of our leading environmental lawyers. In Europe, David Brown is based in the Paris office and has particular experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Another notable practitioner in the dispute resolution practice is Alec Emmerson, who has been highly recommended in both our commercial arbitration and commercial mediation chapters. Based in Dubai, Emmerson is a “first-class” consultant at the firm and works with high profile clients involved in complex disputes.

Clyde & Co also has lawyers featured in our management labour and employment, franchise, merger and acquisition, product liability defence and real estate chapters. The firm performs exceptionally well in insurance-related matters, demonstrating its dominating presence in this market.
